I find the term "lightly beat" intriguing - sounds a bit like something you would find in a recipe book.

So, anyway, what constitutes lightly beating? Striking your wife with a rolled up newspaper, a clip round the ear, a couple of punches to the solar plexus?

And who will measure and adjudicate as to whether the beating was indeed light, or was perhaps a tad heavy?

I wonder if the Islamic Council also advocate "lightly tossing" the gay/lesbian people caught inflagrante off a cliff?

Or "lightly cutting" the necks of young lambs without stunning them first in the practice of Halal Butchery (aka Barbaric Butchery)?

These people are still living in the Dark Ages.

Hence the expression the rule of thumb... comes from a man only being allowed to hit his wife with a stick no bigger than his thumb...

No one will as a lot of them live with extended family often of the husbands and know little English.

Some coppers of my acquaintance refer to this practice as Tooting Foreplay.

I never knew Sir Geoffrey Boycott was a member of the Islamic Council?

I propose that the wives in question are allowed to knock some sense into the heads of The Islamic Council.

When I studied criminal law at a level my law tutor did use sir Francis Buller as the judge who brought this into law however it does appear something feminists picked up in the 70s and have run with since.

I thought the term came from the fact your thumb is about two inches, so if you bend it, its an inch and it refers to measurement by approximate, rather than say using a defined measure (such as a ruler).

If you're beating your wife with a stick no larger than your thumb, you either have trouble hitting her with it, or your thumbs are too large to hold the stick properly.
