I think there are three kinds of celebrity. Those who seek celebrity for its own sake, those who's talent and achievements bring them fame and those who are unfortunate to be in the right place at the right time to be made into celebrities regardless of their personal taste.

The first are a filthy stain on the face of humanity and their extinction would raise the average value of human life. The second are to be cherished, because they have contributed to the greater good of human existence and the third to be pitied to some extent, because they usually suffer as a result of something that isn't their fault.

I'm sure some people find themselves in the public consciousness purely by pursuing their talent or trade for the sake of making some money but most "famous" people clearly like the limelight or else they would not do what they do or stated doing it in the first place.

They probably didn't get enough praise or attention as children.

People attaching themselves to celebrity deaths is up there with the most annoying social media crimes.

I could be wrong but I suspect the people on my facebook sharing the video to "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", my not be the biggest Prince fans out there.

Same after Bowie died, several people expressed their grief because the man from ‘Labyrinth’ had died.

When Jimmy Tarbuck dies, who are they gonna wheel out to say how great he was as he seems to do everyone elses, or has he already recorded something to say how great he was and that he knew the Beatles

This is one of my favourite posts of all time

I think Jimmy Tarbuck could be listed as a professional "Celebrity Death Compilation Clips Interviewee". Apart from chasing a small while ball into golf holes, what else does he do these days?

Anyone else see Gervais' comments on Bowie keeping his illness a secret because "I emailed him to say I liked his new album and he never mentioned it". Totally up himself if he thinks he and his opinion were important enough to Bowie to share his innermost thoughts

Anyone see this moving tribute from Rita Ora, who once collaborated on an album track with Prince;

'This is coming from a place I never new existed in my heart. You were so special to me your presence the music we created the dance-off's we used to have the laughing we shared.

'The funk oozing out of you was un-controllable. I'm not quite sure what to do with myself but I will miss you forever and always. I love you my dear kind friend.'

'May all my prayers go to his family the whole band (you know who you are, I love you all so much) anybody who felt even one little bit of what I was lucky enough to experience face to face, and let us keep alive the one thing he knew would last forever, his music. I love you P. I will never forget you. Love your Rita.'

I had uncontrollable funk oozing out of me once. Was locked in the toilet for 12 hours!

Probably needed beating more. I can't understand the desire to be famous for its own sake at all.

I think its more a comical moment about how we view celebrities as 'people in our lives', that we actually consider them 'our friends'. In many cases we (as a generalisation of society) refer to them as if they were our friends and personal aquantiances, referring to them by their first name and taking an interest in anything relating to them.

Gervais is a cock, but he is quite a clever witty cock with it.

I'm a bit cynical, but I don't understand why people would publically wear their grief except to court publicity. I think grief and love are private things, and this seems more like a carefully crafted obituary piece than anything else.

Certainly, when people have died, I haven't generally go to the family or partners of the dead with a carefully constructed statement, that co-opts their loss to me and my relationship with the deceased.

Answer awkward questions from Yewtree police officers.

No you don't, at least not like that - free speech is only protected from the state and apparatus of the state.

But I generally agree with you that its an absurd concept the idea of 'grieving' over someone who isn't actually real to you. Obviously people feel s**t when someone the respect or were inspired by dies, but its become an epidemic now.

I wonder what people said about Jimmy Savile when he died....

He's got a diary full of funerals to attend.
