Just before my mother died she watched the horror of Lockerbie unfold. She feared for the future and wondered what kind of world she was going to leave behind.

There have been plenty of atrocities since then but part of me is optimistic that actually, in the grand scale of things, they are still relatively rare.

I still believe that there are far more good people than bad, even among the horror of today.

I think this is true, the actual threat is very rare and largely ever present given the 'war on IS'. I don't think we have much choice but to confront IS, but the uncomfortable reality is that they will always seek to strike against their perceived enemies.

We can only do our best to identify them, eliminate or remove them from being a threat and target them overseas. The reality is likely that even if we destroy IS as an organisation, like Al-Qaeda it will appear elsewhere with a different name.

Sadly it will always be innocent civilians, on both sides, that suffer the consequences of the ambitions and posturing of the powerful few.

I'm supposed to be flying out to Brussels next week and staying overnight at the Sherrington (about a stones throw from the bombing) to give a presentation.

Let's hope so; it does seem to be getting under control now.

Surely if we are going to confront them we need to do it properly. Commit a mass group of ground troops and others world wide do the same, we agree to an acceptable loss of casualties and then wipe them out. This 'proportional response' bollocks is a waste of time and just sees us wait patiently until the next attack. Either take them out once and for all or stay out of the Middle East altogether. Happy with either.

This sort of stuff will keep happening until ISIS and all other types of similar terrorist organisations are confronted and beaten hand to hand in combat.

Bombing little pockets of their operations on an ad hoc basis with drones is like swatting a wasp with a rolled up newspaper - sooner or later you've got to deal with the nest and delaying it just see the wasps nest grow in size and the wasps get angrier and nastier.

Good job we didn't agree to schengen - otherwise that might have been Heathrow, Gatwick etc.

I don't like saying I told you so, but I did and will say it again.... the way the EU operates it's freedom of movement policy with no borders just makes it easier for terrorists, weapons and ammunition to be smuggled in and around Europe.

Steve McClaren's Newcastle defence was harder to penetrate FFS.

Tactically and logistically, its problematic to commit ground troops into Syria, whilst eastern Iraq is unsecured, and we have no real support basis to secure supply lines. Its usually a bad tactical move to get involved in an ongoing civil war (especially when the 'legitimate regime' is a Russian client state) and the enemy aren't restricted to specific areas and territory.

We're also not really comfortable as a nation with the idea of an acceptable casualty level and expenditure of another drawn out long campaign (that could enflame the region, drawing in some of the neighbour states). Certainly if we want Turkey to back a military campaign they'll want concessions that will alienate the Kurdish, and if we support the Kurdish forces, we'll alienate Turkey.

To be honest, not invading the Middle East at all is more of a told you so and I did that 13 years ago.
