Born in 1945 I was probably amongst the healthiest - early years - generation. Born into post war austerity but also the beginning of major social reform (the NHS etc.,). Those born much earlier often suffered from real poverty (not the poverty so many are claimed to live in now). Those born more recently have been brought up in the fast/convenience food and electronic toy age.

Nice read Hoofie (and Becky). I was born six years after you but yes, that was my childhood too. Football is a microcosm of life, by the way. The world is f***ed and so is the once-beautiful game.

The most sensible and interesting thread I've seen on here for many a long month! Born in 1955 and relate to all that's been said here. No computers or electronic games & limited TV meant we had to occupy ourselves with outdoor games when the weather was good and indoor games & books when it wasn't. School teachers were strict but fair and all adults were respected. Yes it was a different time but times change. I remember my grandparents talking about times in the 1920s & 30s and my parents and their siblings talking about times in the 40s & 50s. Not surprising that our generation harks back to the 60s & 70s. This generation certainly has its problems like all generations did but you only have to think of the advances made in science & medicine to realise that it's great to be alive in 2016!

I was born in 1962 and do remember drinking Corona and R Whites pop, but it was as a treat, not with every meal and the exercise I did, football, rugby etc more than made up for the amount I drank. I think one of the 'newer' problems are these energy drinks, I can see why athletes may use them but I see an awful lot of very unathletic looking people drinking them and I don't see how that can be good for them.

My preferred soft drink of choice is actually exempt. As is R Whites. I see the diabetics are moaning it's unfair as they have to buy Lucozade. Do people not understand that taxing something always means someone will pay more? Even if you need it, or claim to. Haulage companies have to buy fuel, it doesn't mean they pay less for it than someone who likes to drive but doesn't need to.

Great post, HH. Sorry to hear about Parky. I'm 1959 vintage - much the same childhood, teenage and early adult experiences, including weekend milk-round and then after-work sporting and other activities working (at Shell Centre at Waterloo). These comments, from you and Becky, rang very true. "We never had pizzas, burgers or KFC and drank water, not fizzy pop or cola." "We never, ever, spent a weekend going 'round the shops' being stuffed full of cake and buns, crisps or sausage rolls to keep us quiet." Welcome to the Machine! I can't elaborate right now (due to the effects of another of the dumbing down products so feely available to us - for a small price). So true. Its an important distinction between my child hood and adult hood, that there wasn't a vast array of easily purchased food available and minimal outlets. There were maybe one or two places you could get a sandwich. Good luck finding somewhere that sold food during the day, and the options were pretty slim. The chippie. Even pubs rarely had much more in the way of edible fare. There wasn't streets full of 15 hour a day take out, sandwich bars, kebabs, fried chicken etc. I think in my hometown, there were two places that sold sandwiches (both bakers), two greasy spoon cafes, one KFC and a Wimpy. That was the option during the day. Now cheap food stuffs and drinks are ubiquitous, and full of fats and sugar, to make them tasty, and our livestyles have become less active.

I have long suspected that it may have something to do with the growth hormones that they feed to chickens. Seriously, a friend who rescues battery hens once showed a photo of a ten week old chick that was the size and development of a 6 month old hen - i.e. it had been 'overgrown' to bring it to laying eggs sooner. Poor thing still tweeted like a small chick. They do exactly the same to mass produce cheap chicken for the table.....which we then eat, along with the hormones that it has consumed. If anything that would make us all larger and more muscular. I have often wondered if that's why ladies boobs have got bigger. Why the majority of fat people are fat is not difficult. More energy in v energy expenditure. Any surplus is stored as fat. That happens whatever the source, whether that be protein, fat or carbs (sugar). Our Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) has decreased significantly over the years and we eat too much. Kids don't play out The amount of sugar we consume is undoubtedly a problem but we are in danger of making the same mistakes we made with saturated fat where we demonise one particular food group.
