Have you been on eBay/Amazon?

Worth trawling through to see if you can get items cheaper and delivered rather than going to Richer Sounds where the salesman has targets to achieve..... also quite often someone does a review of the items at the bottom of the listing which is much better than "What Hi-fi" or some other paid reviewer's opinion as you know it is a genuine user with no axe to grind either way and will give feedback based on actual performance.

I did this for choosing some budget computer monitors and opted for Creative Gigaworks over Bose based on those reviews.

Speaking as someone who spent many years posting on an AV forum that's great in principle but sadly not true in actual fact as far too many people are defensive about the equipment that they bought purely because they bought it and therefore it must be the best.

Secondly forums and suchlike have forum favourites which seem to gather a momentum of their own irrespective of actual quality.

I recently committed a cardinal sin and bought a new AV amp based solely on forum reviews without listening to it and was astonished on how poor it was. It may well have had all the current bells and whistles but the sound quality was not a patch on the unit that it had replaced.

Very happy with my Marantz PM5005 amp but wish I'd got one with a digital input, which the 6005 model has. As it goes I recently brought the Crystal Acoustics WiDAC so I can stream wirelessly through my analogue set-up. Cambridge Audio S30s also plenty good enough to fill our through-lounge and then some. I went for those instead of the Q Acoustics.

If I were to purchase a new sound system for my home I'd seriously consider the ranges of wireless audio systems and speakers that are now available. Depends on what you're going to be playing but the throught of having sound throughout the house without all the wires is very appealing.

Thanks for the feedback, useful. FYI, I already have Sonos throughout the house and stream quite happily from Deezer (coz I am a geezer). I am after buying something purely for my own listening pleasure and to play vinyl on and build a new collection of old classics. That's the plan

No serious stererophile would go within a million miles of a graphic equaliser. A piece of junk that distorts hi-fidelity; not improves it. Not taken seriously by any vinyl enthusiast (or, indeed, stereo enthusiast.)

Your question is impossible to answer without a budget but that notwithsanding:

Turntable; If you can afford it, get at least a second hand Linn LP5 Sondek, preferably Valhalla'd if not Lingoed (those are power supplies) with a Linn tonearm but a Rega RB300 if you're on a budget. Failing that, a Linn Basik or a Rega RP3 are top entry-level decks. If you're really on a very tight budget, look at a Pro-ject essential 2 (which I think you can get from Richer Sounds.)

Amp wise, the Naim Nait has no peer. In my view, nothing even close. The likes of Arcam and Mission/Cyrus are good alternatives but if you can afford Naim, get it. You should be able to find one on eBay and to some extent the older the model the better. Nait 1 and Nait 2 in good condition are dynamite.

There are a lot of speaker options but if you go with the above set-up, you could do worse than a pair of Linn Kans although recommendation would depend somewhat on the size of your listening space (do you want/can accomodate floorstanders, for instance.)

Lastly, don't bother with anything Japanese. In the main, it's mass market crap, not serious audio. When it comes to serious hi-fi, English and American manufactures are king. Also, Google Stereophile magazine and look at its annual "recommended components" list.

Do buy via eBay...or from second hand sources. Those who invest in decent audio gear tend to maintain it well and there are real bargains to be had (there are plenty of Hi Fi for Sale boards you can Google._ Even if you accumulate your set-up slowly, one component at a time you can end up with fantastic sound for a competitive price versus off-the-shelf JapanoJunk bought new.
