Thought it was was enjoyable, well written and quite well acted until the last half an hour. I liked all the nods to days gone by (Finn in the Falcons turret, stormtrooper TK338 getting a name check, Han Solo admitting that there's always a way to blow the big uber base up etc).

However, the climax was uninspiring apart from the unexpected patricide by Kylo Ren (who needs to keep his mask on if he wants to look and sound badass).

7.5 / 10.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

It was decent, unfortunately I'll never know fully how much I could have enjoyed it as my b****** of a little brother took great pleasure in telling me the Han Solo twist the day before. I spent most of the film trying to work out whether I thought the girl was incredible or slightly above average. I'm still not sure.

When making VII, JJ was very unashamed in saying he wanted it to feel like A New Hope, as he wanted to recreate the experience he had watching that as a child for a new generation, whilst knowing that (most of) the original generation would hopefully appreciate it too.

Whether you think that is a good or bad thing is obviously subjective.

The other argument is that the basic framework of that narrative is a great story. A nobody plucked from obscurity to go on a quest with destiny, accompanied by a wise old sage to defeat evil. Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, King Arthur & countless others all use it... It wasn't a fresh idea when A New Hope used it.

As for Rey being revealed as the potential Jedi, and not Fin as per the marketing... That's called holding something back.
JJ is all about the mystery, misleading & the reveal. And there's TWO more parts to go.

Have to agree on Snoke though... That whole concept didn't work. In the script he was much more obscured/hooded/mysterious like the Emperor. Shame.

I got told about the Han Solo twist/death the night before too so was expecting that ... Still jumped when Han got light-sabred though!
It at times that I was watching a compression/mash up of the original trilogy (parts 4-6) ... Death Star/tunnel chase, father and son reveal ... The son losing a limb.
I have a hunch that Rey and Kylo Ren are siblings ... Why not play the separated at birth thing again ... Kylo also told Rey that Han was the father she never had, after Han's death ... Leia embraced Rey in a mother's hug.
However the flashbacks upon touching the light sabre could mean she's Luke's child?
Where were the republic? We saw the resistance.
Which planets were destroyed by the star killer?
Why did they park the falcon at the bottom of the steps? Unnecessary scenic footage?

LOVED the jokes from BB8, chewwie's conversation with the nurse and Kylo's reference to clones.
Storm troopers still cannot shoot straight!!!

Sorry, can't agree with that.

I thought the film was poor. For the money and effort put into it they come up with a plot line that is practically identical to Episode IV : A New Hope. And that is probably the biggest disappointment.

I thought John Boyega's acting was truly awful, and really hoped his character would be killed off at the end. Another Hayden Christensen in the making.
The lead stormtroopers character was abysmal, still if you hire Game of Thrones actors you deserve all you get.
God knows what has happened to Carrie Fisher, she doesn't sound anything like her previous voice and seems to be acting through gritted teeth.
Pity that Max Von Sydow character didn't last long, he could have been good for the film series.

Not all bad, though :-
The BB8 droid was a good character and Chewbacca was exceptional, thank god they didn't kill him as well.
Daisy Ridley's performance as Rey developed well through the film and by the end, you could see her as an established character.
Kylo Ren's character is good for the film though no idea what this Snoake character is supposed to have come from.
Good to see some returning characters, ie. Admiral Akbar and Nien Nunb but what has happened to Lando and Wedge ?

I read a review from the New York Times last night, and the critic had it spot on. Despite it's flaws (ie. Jar Jar Binks, Hayden Christensen etc), The Force Awkens makes you appreciate the prequels alot more.

The fact that it's Star Wars, the devoted fans will love it anyway.

Agree with everything you've said. Snoake is straight out of the guardians of the galaxy. Not star wars esque at all. I thought the whole thing was pretty bland and disappointing. Say what you will about the prequels- they were cheesy awkward and at times embarrasing, but they never felt the need to completely alter the characters that we know and love. This new one had none of the stupidity of the prequel films but lacked fun and any of the trademark star wars archetypes.

I'll see you and raise you this:

Finn - we can just "use the force!"
Han - no no thats not how it works!
Chewie - graaaag! (actually that's exactly how it works...)

Worked for me :-)

As my family left the cinema we all said when will the dark side learn not to build large spherical bases with super weapons and trenches.

You're being kind. And yes the villain was another huge problem. He took the mask off and became a puff with enough enormous hooter. Where did he get that nose from? Leia's side doesn't have it (we've seen her lineage quite a ways back), and Han has a pretty small nose. I can't take the cut seriously.

Rey is Luke's daughter, this is why she can do things with the force that Luke took teachings from obi before he could do them.
there are many clues, but none more so than when Ren is interrogating her and he says that he knows she imagines a giant ocean of water to fall asleep, with an island in the middle. Yet she has.lived on Jakku since she was little, a desert planet.
Luke was teaching her from very young, and when things went south he dropped her on Jakku before running away. Ren has his suspicions on who she is.
I too was disappointed with the second half after I watched it, but then thought about it some and then watched it again, catching some things I missed.
yes it's much like to plot line of new hope, but there is good reason.

Ouzo Dan Flag Behind you 28 Dec 15 8.42am Send a Private Message to Ouzo Dan Add Ouzo Dan as a friend

Watched it last night & thought it was poor.
A mega death star (starkiller base which is a nod to Luke Skywalker who was originally going to be called Luke starkiller)
This mega death star that just so happens to have a vulnerable point on the surface... We have been here before.

Kylo Ren is even more of a whiney bitch than Anakin & when he takes his helmet off all I could do was focus on his rediculous nose, there is absolutely no resemblance to Han or Leia.

Rey, whilst clearly strong in the force is completely untrained yet out of the blue she can use force persuade & then go on to wield a lightsaber like she's mace windu & defeats kylo ren thus confirming Ren as the most pathetic Sith Lord of the entire star wars franchise.

Snoke is played by Andy Serkis so I suspect when he does make a proper debut I expect him to be more Gollum in size than guardians of the galaxy.
There is also more than a passing resemblance to Darth Plagueis.

There's hope for Finn & the mantle of loveable rogue being passed to him.

Thought the tai fighter/x-wing fights were weak.

What they did get right was fleshing out the universe, all the little things happening in the background, the aliens, the speeders all of that was spot on & I found myself enjoying that far more than the awful plot.

The mountains are calling & I must go.
