Pioneers in electric vehicles too! It's all about long life milk. I love to laugh at all the people panic buying fresh milk in local shops after so much as a snowflake has settled.

We gave up the milkman 20 odd years ago when we both worked full time and the milk would sit on our south facing doorstep from 10am till 5pm. Gone off by next morning! Now buy Cravendale - lasts ages.

I remember our milkman used to sell the glass bottles of corona fizzy pop, not even sure if you can still get the stuff.

On a similar note does anyone still have a paper boy / girl ? I hear that suicideatselhurst has this...(NSFW) Attachment: Suicideatselhurst favorite toy..jpg (8.89Kb)
You're asking me what it's all about, and I can't tell you because I don't know what's going on myself. |

My dad was a milkman and I helped our local Express milkman in Carshalton as a "milkboy" aged 10 to 15 in the 1960's. Sorry mate, times have moved on... like the Miners and Chimney Sweeps, Milkmen are consigned to history. It was a nice era when they operated and I take your point about the wider service they provided, but it is a dying industry. Globalisation affects Dairy Farmers as much as supermarkets trying to screw their suppliers. I would happily pay more for a pint to help farmers and ensure the animals are well treated.
There were also off licences that delivered too. The digital age isn't as modern as people think!!

And the rag-n-bone man used to come round with his horse and cart - ringing his bell shouting "ragggy booooone". Those were the days!

Rags a plenty. Our milkman used to have a mini bakery and drinks dispenser on his float. Loads of bottles of pop and the jingly-jangly noise of his huge coin-carrying leather satchel. Seems like another century. Which it was.

On our round from West St to St John's Rd in Wrythe Green Carshalton we had about 10 houses where you had a cup of tea.... I used to get about £2 in tips and 10 bob off of Bill the Milky... good money in them days.
