In North Sumatra you can go trekking in Bukit Lawang, you can book it once you get there. Trekking is 25 euros for 1 day, 60 for 2, and 85 for 3. Bukit Lawang is about 3 - 4 hours from the airport in Medan, and as log as you arrive before about 4 in the afternoon you can get a taxi/minivan straight from the airport, about 30 quid, although can be done a lot cheaper, you will get assaulted by drivers as soon as you walk out, very friendly but can be a bit annoying. Medan is best avoided, although you can get a 5* hotel for about 70 quid a night.
Getting from Medan to Bali the cheapest airline is airasia if booked in advance

Careful with which airline you fly.

Internally or just in general? I'm Emirates flights there and back but pretty sure I'll be on some unheard of carriers internally.

Emirates are great, no worries there. As far as domestic flights are concerned, there are 63 carriers operating in Indonesia. 59 of them are banned from flying in Europe.

I suggest you stick to the other 4.

so an airline which only operates in Indonesia is banned from flying in Europe?

Hi All,

Off to Indonesia for a 3 week holiday in a few weeks. The idea is a few days North in Sumatra to jungle trek, then 2 and a bit weeks of Bali, Gili Islands and Lombok.

All I've booked is return flights and the rest in terms of hotels and internal flights I will sort whilst I'm out there.

Anyone got any tips on things to do and places to avoid?

For any country that likes to tie visitors to a stump and shoot them for drug offences (or indeed any country with a propensity for drug export), I've had my luggage wrapped in the airport, both inbound and outbound.

There have been instances of handlers slipping something "extra" into your luggage before it boards. The intended recipient at the destination doesn't take it out, and you're left explaining why you just brazenly transported 2kg of coke in your luggage.

If the luggage is "clingfilm wrapped", it foremost serves as a deterrent. If you receive the luggage and it looks like it's been tampered with, the film cut etc, you can inform the authorities. Better safe than sorry.

If you know how to swing a club, get a round in at Bali Handara - unbelievable course etched out of the crater of an extinct volcano.

Best Scuba diving in the world, if you are not a diver, learn before you go if you can.

I spent 10 weeks diving around Indonesia and it's an amzing place as that's where the three major world currents meet so the diversity is amazing.

It's an indicator of safety and maintenance standards. Indonesia has a dismal air safety record, even allowing for the fact that a high proportion of domestic flights are in tricky mountain terrain.

Their national airline, Garuda, was banned from European airspace for several years.

I did business in Bali about 10-12 years ago. Fantastic place, live like a Lord for a couple of quid a day. Comments above about flying are spot on, very scary as the weather conditions plus the small and old aircraft make choosing the day you fly an important consideration. The Ferries are a bit better if you've the time for them.
Didn't spend much time elsewhere but I'd have stayed in Bali if I could have.
