Number 1 recommendation: Do not plan a long first day. Driving in Europe is exhausting on your first experience. Day 2 onwards will be OK though. Number 2: Check out European road signs and local Highway Codes. Check out Germany's eco restrictions - you could easily be prevented from driving into city centres. Number 3: Avoid Brussels. No, forget that. Avoid Belgium - crazy road network. Luxemboug is good though.

By the way Dan, you will need to buy winter tyres. It's a legal requirement if there is snow or ice. I believe in the Czech Republic it's mandatory to carry them from November until March. As I recall you have to put them on to use the highways, but that may be only during snow.
