Thanks for all the replies.

He does look a bit pink/white in the photos, but he's more of a shiny gold colour. Very active and always plays in the bubbles.

Thanks mate, i never realised how complex keeping fish was. Back in my day we just chucked a goldfish in a bowl of tap water and it would live for years! Now it's all about levels and filters etc!

Knowing the Hoofster I'm fairly sure that was an intended pun. Might be wrong though so I don't wanna roe about it.

A Golden Tench?

The fins make it look like a tench to me as well. You can get golden ones. If it is then it will probably need to be rehoused in a pond at some stage. I've had one in my pond after 20 years now. It's probably about two pounds in weight.

Having just googled golden tench, I'd say that's exactly what I have.

It seems to be thriving in my tank, is it safe for him to be left in there until he's at the size to put in the pond, or should I remove him straight away?

Thanks again.

Should be fine in the tank for awhile. Once he starts getting bigger I'd transfer him to a pond if you have one.

When my Koi had eggs I was able to keep the hatched fry in a large tank for a couple of years before transferring them to my pond.

They lived in a tank up to about the size in this photo before.

Er, wrong picture. The yellow one in the front was once in my tank.

This was what it was like in the tank.

You're tench probably won't grow to the size of a koi, but it will be better in a pond long term. So are goldfish really.
