I only went into teaching to teach my subject.....But the job comes with a minefield of bulls***......Mind you lots of jobs are similar so fair enough.

You take the money, you take the bulls***.

My wife is a nurse and she says exactly the same about nursing as she spends most of her day filling in forms and making sure that every slightest thing is written down in case someone decides to sue as they caught a cold whilst in the hospital

Ridiculous, obviously, but it wouldn't be an issue if the travel companies didn't shamelessly hike their prices during holiday time. Their greed leaves low income families with little choice except to go during term time or to miss out altogether.

It's not greed, it's supply and demand. The non-term time holiday rules mean there is an over-demand.

Took my two kids out of school after Easter during school term for the first time ever. Paid 50% less than normal, hotel and flights were not busy and everywhere we went was chilled and relaxed, loved it and spent quality time with my kids. Any headteacher that takes that stance doesn't deserve to make decisions. Obviously i would not take mine out of school during exams ect but a week off in the middle of what is day to day schooling is nothing.

Agree.
holidays are way better out of school holiday dates, bubble.
cheaper, the restuarants are not chocka, the holiday venues actually do give a s*** as they are not over full, less people etc.
As a painting contractor, the school holidays were the most impossible dates to go on hols.as I was painting schools.
my girls are all well out of school now, but some years when they were at school we either had no holiday or just went in October & took the consequences.
Cant take a family holiday but the school will tell you to keep the kids off when it suits them for training etc.

Good point mate. School holidays are the busy periods for a lot of contractors.

Presumably we're supposed to holiday separately from our families.

I wonder if she and her fellow teachers strike during term time?

This.
For many who work outside at times, the summer months are a time to 'make hay' after what can be a long struggle in the colder months.
This 'teacher'(never met her but I dislike her already) is more concerned with HER OWN situation, not the situation that many others find themselves in, ie working outside for much of the year.
The worst thing for me personally is that she doesn't see it. She's little more than a product created to hit targets and she appears happy to ignore 'life' as long as the targets are met.............and she can buy strawberries at any time of the year should she choose to.

Is it any wonder that education here is going down the 'kin pan.

So how far would the price increases have to go before it goes beyond simple supply and demand to being a cynical cash grab? According to the below article the average increase is 60%, that doesn't seem a fair amount to me. The term time rules are naturally to blame as they give the tour operators the power but it still doesn't make it right.

For teachers now, if you don't hit yer targets, you don't get a payrise.

Latest thing to come in is formal testing for 4 year olds! Flipping ridiculous.

The NUT voted by some margin to allow term time holidays as it gives those less well off the opportunity to afford to go away.

Still other than not making it easier for people to have a holiday, the tories are doing well for us ain't they?

Until they're not selling at capacity, or close to it. They tend to be overbooked though.

It's no different than early morning flights for business being more expensive than evening ones, and more often than not it can double. Supply and demand.

I fully appreciate that but it's those who set the targets who are wrong...and I doubt many of them have ever needed to look at a weather forecast to earn a crust?
These people dictate when it is a good time for a family to have a holiday despite not knowing how the family earns it's money? One rule should not encompass everyone as KD highlighted earlier and i've equally been in the same position at times. It never stopped our young daughter reading and writing as good as any child her age at school.
As for testing 4yr olds, this to me just shows that those sitting in comfortable seats haven't got a bloody Scooby.

Those in power have 3,2 and 1yr olds to blame over the next few years. Then what?
