It was the right thing to do to continue the peace.

Goodness only knows what Charles was thinking when he met Adams, who probably sanctioned the killing of his uncle.

My preference would be for Adams to be locked away for the rest of his life, however this process has to be adhered to and stuck to, despite the unsavoury pasts of some of those, on both sides, who are now viewed as 'elder statesmen'.

Great from both sides.

How could it not be?

The people of NI deserve a chance at proper peace (and an end to dissident republicanism and loyalist criminality).

Just the loyalists are 'criminal' then?

"Criminal" as in the loyalist "cause" now is basically thuggery.

DRs still pose a threat to peace through terrorism.

There is a first time for everything! Good post.

It's not easy, not for either of them or for a lot of people watching, but it's the right thing to do if people are going to move on.

Still a long way to go though.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I think they're largely organized crime gangs now for the most part (there isn't too much in the way of employment opportunities for their skill sets). For the most part the Provisional IRA still exist at its core but in compliance with the Good Friday Agreement, similarly the same with the loyalist groups.

Problem is what do you do with 'freedom fighters' whos only skills are intimidation, assassination, moving contraband, blowing s*** up and spending time in prison. Hence once peace is achieved most 'terrorist/freedom fighters/resistance groups' drift into organized crime.

However they still have their ridiculous offshoots.

Eh??? What??? Hilarious comment, utterly hilarious!! Is that what i said!! Buffoonary!!! Read a newspaper every now and again Sir!

Ill explain it to you nice and simply.

Loyalist groups, in the main, are no longer engaged in terrorism... they are largely driven by self-interest, maintaining control of their communities through fear, extortion and drugs. Crime and thuggery. They use the peace process as a vehicle to make money.

Dissident Republicans are still engaged in terrorism and the planning of terrorist attacks. Do they enagage in criminal activity... of course. Are they nice people? Not in my eyes. Do they represent the biggest threat to the peace process? Probably.

It just goes to show that time is a great healer.

I'm sure Diana's family will forgive Charles in time.

Good, we agree then. Perhaps you might consider applying the use of adjectives like 'criminal' and 'thugs' to both sides when discussing them. The left has always kind of implied that the Loyalists criminals and thugs were somehow worse than the Republican criminals and thugs.

They were far worse just before and at the beginning of the troubles - Attacking the civil rights movement, Bombay Street, etc - but it evened itself out over time via the IRA. The Paras also indulged with The Springhill Massacre and Bloody Sunday and one or two other incidents as did, obviously, the INLA, UDA, UFF, Shankill Butchers. No innocent parties in this conflict and those who think one side is more heroic than the other are just sentimental fools.

What isn't in doubt by is that thuggery and criminality aside - the IRA were an incredibly tough, intelligent and highly capable group of terrorists as has been recognised by those who had to take them on.

Nothing to be proud of but they were, unfortunately, effective.

Heard one of their bombs go off in East Dulwich. Stays with me to this day the sound of it.

Well you wouldn't expect to find a republican dealing in drugs - or protection, would you - well would you?

No it did not 'even itself out' The IRA are responsible for killing far more people that the republicans and that’s an undeniable fact Kermit. The IRA are reported to have killed roughly 4 time more people during the trouble. And no, I do not recognise them as being “incredibly tough, intelligent” just mindless thugs like their unionist counterparts.
