If you can stretch your itinerary, I would recommend Grand Canyon and Monument Valley which are must see places and Meteor Crater is also interesting.
If you are only going there once in your life then you should definitely see the first two.

My 2 cents:

Never been to LA, and never want to go. Chalk me up as another recommending Chicago over LA. Great town - like New York but polite (the gun crime is all in the dodgy suburbs and nowhere near the city). In summer, Chicago is a more akin to a seaside town than a city.

San Fran is a cool town, but Mark Twain wasn't lying when he wrote "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco". It can be 30F colder in "the City" than it is across the Golden Gate. By the way - make sure you cross the GG and see Sausalito, it's a cool little place. Do not try and drive anywhere in SF as the traffic will drive you into a murderous rage, and then you can't park when you get to where you're going. Do ride the trolleys for fun and for transportation. Don't forget Lombard(i) Street - it's just such an oddity. Go to Pier 39 to see the Sea Lions, but forget the pier itself unless you really want to go eat at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.

New York: too much to do, not enough time - but your choices will depend on your interests. Do go up the Empire State, but go very early as the lines become like a theme park as the day goes on and you'll end up in hour-long lines to go up AND come back down. Well worth it though. Ellis Island is interesting but don't bother getting off the ferry at Liberty Island or you'll be stuck there a lot longer than you want to be. Get your selfies with Lady Liberty from the boat as it goes by. Walk about as much as you can to see the sights - a city block is only about 100 yards so 10 blocks is just a shade over 1/2 a mile. Ground Zero is very moving.

Vegas is a blast and you can have a fabulous time even without gambling. The casinos themselves are tourist attractions and just mindboggling as to the scale and detail. The clanging of fruit machines will grate on you by the third day if not before. Fremont Street is worth the cab ride. FYI, the Grand Canyon tours from Vegas only go to the bottom end of it but not to the main part that you've seen in all the photos. It's still good, but its not the "real" thing - so try to add Arizona to your trip if you want the full GC experience. Bonus: you get to point and laugh at all the seppos going to see the old London Bridge thinking it's Tower Bridge.

I actually live near Yosemite in Oakhurst. I would suggest dropping LA too, unless you wanna hit Universal or Disney/California Adventure. Depends what you like, there's some real cool places around the Yosemite area, wineries, old mining towns and some cool history. Through Yosemite to Mammoth you got biking, hiking and fishing etc. Death valley if you can be a pretty awesome loop if your driving.

Highly recommend Monterey and Carmel. Agree re San Diego - great food, relaxed atmosphere
