I hate to break this to you petal but you don't run this site.

It's important while watching the Tories to remember what a bunch of scum bags the opposition are.

I'm glad to help with that.

And yes I had off it,but you are old enough to remember the unions ruled this country.callaghan was totally out of his depth, bullied ,bodies not being buried rubbish spilling up everywhere..rats everywhere.
I was hod carrying at the time, and the building trade was f***ed.

Yep they wanted to nationalise the construction industry at the time. I was told by a UCATT official you had to join a union to work on this site?
Thatcher gets in & this guy was extinct. Same as the old GPO, 6 months to get a telephone line fitted with one choice of phone. In my experience most union officials are well union officials because they are piss poor at their jobs in the first place (my guy at UCATT was on the take & bent) when doing my apprenticeship I had to as the guy in the AUEW (name long gone forgotten) stuff my rep should of told me. The AUEW Rep was a stand up guy & old school

I remember 82. We'd moved to Cornwall on the back of the redundancy money my dad got from the evening news.
Bought a grocers shop. Was great for about a year till the docks shut down Falmouth as a place to live went downhill. No one barely had any money on the estate. I remember a woman coming in the shop begging my dad to let her have a packet of tampons for her daughter on tick as she had no cash.

Fast forward a few years. Living in Bracknell, A lot of the major manufacturing sites close down. Many made unemployed. Lots of skint people and not many jobs.

Look at now. Unemployment figures are low. But underemployed numbers have skyrocketed.

I've also seen a wider disparity between what those at the top earn - not doing too bad out of Tory Austerity - and those who have see wages stagnate or fall or are stuck on zero hours contracts so they don't know what they're getting from one week to the next.

Tories don't give a s***. How many ex armed forces are homeless? Yet they go on about brave servicemen and women serving your country. It's a shame they don't.

On the contrary, I think most people give a s***, regardless of their political slant. They just give a s*** through a certain lens or with a perimeter around said concern. Some draw that too narrow, some push out too wide.

The great irony I suppose is that most here do one or the other, and most people not even bothering to contribute probably have a more reasonable, nuanced point of view, so don't feel the need for endless 'knock abouts' as substitute for going to therapy. Oh and before anyone points the finger, no I don't exclude myself from that criteria. I just like to say something that means something, where often around these parts the same record plays.

Point taken. But I must clarify, when I said Tories, I meant the party not voters.

Poor sod. you don't seem to have a lot of luck in life no wonder your so bitter & resentful all the time. How sad!! You make your own luck in life sunshine & you roll with the punches. If you take your defeatist view all the time, you are there for the rest of your life.

The state is other people's money and a tiny bit of yours.

The state does not exist to provide a nice lifestyle for everyone. It is not responsible for everything negative that happens to you.

It should try to help those who create wealth as that tax and employment benefit the state and it should provide as best a safety net as possible for those vulnerable. This country is one of the best in the world at doing both of those things.

It should also place value....and it does place value, in those public sector jobs that make the wheels of society move.....If it wants these sectors to do well it should do far better in ensuring that these jobs are attractive to people....it should also stop making them political footballs.

If the individual can't offer something as value to an employer or customer then they become a burden on the state...in other words, the rest of us pay for them.

Essentially it comes down to what you view the job of the state is.

I think people have to be realistic and pragmatic about what is possible. Politicians lie for power....only the gullible believe in free lunches....It's why the Labour party is full of young people....because youth is innocent and inexperienced and will follow the pied piper, whereas those who have been around the block know where the piper is leading them.

Yeah, such a significant difference that. Is that the same distinction difference you make between Nazis and Nazi sympathisers?

The way you engage in politics is to increase the polarisation between right and left.

People are not required to agree but they can still be civil to each other.

I'm guilty of this on the site as much as many of us but recent times have taken things up a notch.

It would be better if Hol was a bit more civil.

That'll be the result of a global energy crisis coupled with the end of the Bretton Woods in '71 (look it up).
Anyone who thinks that the Tories (or any other) could have contained these two issues is.......just wrong tbh.

Global Energy Crisis? It's a conspiracy.

Under Corbyn and McDonnell Socialism, working people will become worse off as the economy disintegrates - mass unemployment, hyper-inflation, civil unrest.

So I can't say the Bretton Woods system is a conspiracy, but it's ok for you to say that 9/11 was!

Oh dear.

I had to call you out on the note thing. It was a joke. A stupid one.

As for labour policies im not happy with, I'll have to have another look through. Don't expect a reply to soon.

I'd also appreciate if we could stick to Tories in the Tory conference thread.

I haven't seen much today due to work. The news is full of that white Christian terrorist attack in Vegas and not much about the conference.

From what I've heard many speakers have spent half the time denigrating Labour (shows how s*** scared they are). Didn't they learn anything from the Daily Mail - people see through that crap.
Any policy announcements?

Sure it was a joke. A good joke for a politician and also an accurate joke on our finances....even now.

I think it's reasonable to say that people are scared of Corbyn taking power yes. I'm reasonably ok, but I have a nephew just starting out in an ok job and I could see how Marxists running a capitalistic economy would be pretty bad.
