Willis did alright. Well Botham was the only other bowler either side of Willis as captain, and he never won a test. A bowling captain is a rarity in all test cricket. Not one current side has one.

Fast bowlers are a rarity captaining county cricket sides too but there have been a few spinners. I suppose that in recent years Shane Warne was the best bowling captain around and many think that he should have been captain of Australia. There have been a few fast bowling international captains a couple of decades ago although I can't think of any that were successful. Sean Pollock, Heath Streak, Courtney Walsh and Waqar Younis are the ones that come to mind

All the best captains with longevity were batsmen, those 3 above plus Border, Fleming, Smith, Dhoni etc. I reckon Dan Vettori is probably the only one who has been a bowler primarily and had a good stint as captain.

Talk about hit the nail on the head. It always comes down to money.....all those jokers paying for the test cricket are being stiffed by a system that ultimately cares more for a formula that brings in the most money than actually being the best on the cricket field.

There was some tactical nous though - not just Mike Brearley - but Gooch, Gatting, Gower, Geoffrey, Peter Willey. We seem to have none at all, and in top test cricket you need to think!

Has no one figured out yet that you have to be way better than the opposition to win away in international cricket? The game is largely about conditions and the player's ability to play those conditions. Our guys have cut their teeth and become successful mostly playing English wickets and invariably suck abroad. It has never been any different and works the same to a greater or lesser for all countries.

More so when the equipment changes, like the ball. Remember when Guardiola's side had to use a Mitre ball in the cup? People used to moan about the rugby ball used in Italy too, as it was the only six nations side that didn't use a Gilbert ball. That was Mitre too funnily enough.
