You posted ''A tragic week, but if you poison the atmosphere, someone is going to get sick'' but refuse to accept that the poison was administered many many years ago.
Don't do that.

Are you saying that immigration is an administration of poison to this country? Please clarify.

My take is that the poison is the build up of anti immigrant xenophobic borderline racist rhetoric that (to my mind) seeped into general discourse over the past few weeks.

I'll do what I like. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Not at all. Only in the very large doses that we've been subjected to for many years now.

My take differs. See above.

How as a Turkish person do you feel about the way Turks have been represented as a result of the possibility of Turkey possibly becoming a fully fledged member of the EU

Is poison really the right word to describe immigrant / immigration? If anything, I'd say the reaction of some towards immigrants / immigration borders on poisonous.

Well, it's ensured I'm voting to stay in even though I was undecided at the beginning of the campaign. In terms of how Turk's are represented I think there's underlying racism behind some of it. I personally don't think Turkey will ever fulfil the criteria to join in my lifetime, which for Turks is a pity because they could do with the improved democracy and freedom that would result from doing so. What was quite telling was when Gove talked about 5 countries involved in accession talks but only named two, Turkey and Albania. There are 35 chapters Turkey has to complete before fulfilling the criteria and in 10 years it's achieved 1 so Turkey has just been brought into the debate to s*** stir.

Fair enough, I just didn't want you to be unwittingly misconstrued as it seemed out of character for you

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Thanks for answering.

Back to thread topic, some have said the crime wasn't political, but according to press reports 'Mair told police he was a “political activist” as he was arrested a mile from the scene, the prosecution said.'

I think there's a good chance that his links with hard right wing ideology alongside photos of Mair (if it was him) behind a Britain First banner shows him to be racist.
Although we all like the idea of free speech, should Britain First and their ilk be outlawed because of incitement to racial hatred?

You don't kill an idea by banning it. Has history taught you nothing?

This is true, but you can also run the risk of excarbating iffy ideology by allowing it to flourish on social media etc.
Tis a moral conundrum.
