I can't believe anyone is introducing race and identity politics into a thread about the new manager.

Irrelevant in my view.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

If we finish 17th or better under PV, bearing in mind all the issues around squad rebuild, I will consider the season to have been a great success.

At this juncture I'd absolutely take 17th spot now given the palavra towards succession planning post Hodgson.

If he gets the financial backing this summer (and potentially Jan 2022), then my expectations could improve... But either way, looking forward to the new season and hopefully positive direction the club will go under a natural born winner in Patrick Vieira!!!

You don't think it's a positive that there is a BAME manager in the prem, particularly for a club that comes from a culturally diverse community and itself a strong advocate for BAME players?

I would take 17th, however my expectation for this year is between 13th/16th.

We should be investing wisely this summer and also keeping hold of talent from those that have reached the end of their contract.
3 new signings will be enough from the players we had last season, I don't want to move too soon this summer.

I don't think he's been employed because he's black though! He's been employed because of his skillset.
If it was a white manager would it be a negative?

PV has got a big challenge ahead. Plus side is he will be able to help choose incoming players. Downside is the turbulence of the current out of contract position. Big season ahead. Here’s hoping it goes well and PV leads us to glory.

OK Mr Pedant, but three consecutive vowels?? What do you expect from us, the great unwashed?

The more people bang on about the importance of having black managers, to the point of it being a serious issue that has to be dealt with, then the more aggro is caused when black players don't apply to be one or fail and are sacked.

Ed Aarons in the Guardian is reporting today that discussions were held about the job with Vieira back in April.
I’m curious about if he wasn’t seen as the right man for the job back then, why is he now?
I’m afraid the move smacks of desperation as we did not want to go into a new season without a manager and Vieira appears to be the only one to have bitten.
It may turn out to be an inspired choice, and I hope that to be the case, but the recruitment process seems to have been haphazard and tardy.

Or maybe it was the other way round, and PV saw how Palace were under RH and felt that there could be a better opportunity for him later than taking this challenge.
