Benteke had a proclivity to take up positions at the far post when the ball was out wide. Edited by Willo (17 Dec 2020 11.22pm)

Ironic that he will miss the games against Liverpool and Villa, the two teams he played for, and has something to prove, just as he was getting back to his best!

I watched the Villa v Burnley game yesterday which ended in a draw. Both teams battling to get a winner and 2 players went up for a ball and one of them got an outstretched arm across the face and ended up a crumpled heap on the ground . No one got a card or a talking to, the fact that Tekkers got 2 x yellows without even a warning shows you how bad that referee was...

Many players jump with the outstretched arm in the manner Benteke did, does this mean all such challenges are fouls or is this ref interpreting the rules in his own way? Edited by southnorwoodhill (18 Dec 2020 6.27pm)

I shouldn't think this particular ref has an unusual interpretation of the rules, otherwise all his games would end up with the same red card at least once. He just mistakenly took an honest jumping action for foul play. Twice. The point of VAR was that human error from refs be ironed out of the game, but at the risk of repeating my last rant, they are not only abusing the technology by using it when they shouldn't (armpit offsides, nonsense handballs etc), they are failing to use it when they should. Under their current rules, the ref wasn't allowed to jog over to the monitor and taken a second look at the incidents. So he just fecked it up all by himself instead. Old school style! This is what Dermot Gallagher had to say about the 2 yellow cards : "I was surprised when I heard that [from Roy Hodgson] because Benteke was actually booked earlier in the game for exactly the same offence. Put the two yellow cards together, and they were both for leading with a flailing arm, both of which can hit an opponent in the face. "He got a yellow card early on, and the second was almost a carbon-copy incident. We ask for consistency and David Coote was totally consistent in so much that he produced the second yellow card."

Let’s see how consistent it is the next time Kane does exactly the same thing and believe me it won’t be long because he does it every match. But he is the media darling so don’t hold your breath.

See how many players are sent off on Saturday for doing EXACTLY what Benteke did, jump with his arm out.....Kane will do it every time he challenges as will any Moan U player, Livarpool player, Chelsea player etc etc and not one of them will be sent off, even if Coote is the referee!! With respect he does not always defend the decisions. Apropos the Benteke cards, he echoed my comments about consistency shown by David Coote in brandishing cards for two identical incidents.Of course there are those who have taken umbrage at his decisions but he certainly was consistent.

I don't think anyone has campaigned for referees to be consistently making the same bad decisions Willo. I am sure if the resources were available we could identify 100 similar instances this season alone where a yellow card was not produced and therefore there is no consistency. Furthermore, another litmus test for consistency will be if he continues to brandish yellow cards and resultant reds for any player who jumps with a raised arm to win headers.. which I doubt.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |
