Easy answer to this. Scrap offside. With the pace of the current game “goal hangers” would be a liability as play switches direction. It would also open up play because there would effectively be more pitch to defend. More goals guaranteed I reckon, which is never a bad thing.

Under no circumstances should offside be scrapped.

Understanding it is one of the few things we have left over women and must remain that way.

But I suspect quite a few chaps are not aware of the wording of the Law in terms of "Nearer to the opponents goalline...." etc etc !

Very good, but you could of course swap the expressions right wing and left wing to offside and nearside just to keep up the mystique.

lol, we must stop complaining about it promptly then because they're going to notice fairly quickly that we no longer have any understanding of it either.

It was always going to happen the second we start to scrutinise evidence, where to begin and where to end should've been agreed, arranged and written down long before VAR began, common sense once again was never invited.

Good to see that IFAB have said that VAR isn't being used the way it should in some places, and I quote:

"This is the problem. People are trying to be too forensic. We are not looking to make a better decision, we are trying to get rid of the clear and obvious mistakes.
"If video evidence shows that a player was in an offside position, he was offside full stop. If it's not obvious, then the decision cannot be changed, you stay with the original decision.
"We will be communicating to all competitions that are using VAR some updates in the coming weeks, because we are observing some developments that are not particularly the way they should be".

I suspect the final sentence is a reference to the Premier League.

Yep, when you think about it and any of us were in charge of deciding the outcome we would all be scribbling lines all over Zaha and dotting dots all over Teemu Pukki and eventually we'd all be using microscopic fibres with incredibly high powered lenses and we know it lol

Without VAR, Jordan's goal at West Ham would have been ruled offside while Wilf's at Southampton would have stood. Imho, not one of us would have argued.

That VAR chooses to finitely, microscopically analyse potential offside, but only when goals are scored, shows ridiculous hypocrisy.

Why is offside more important at one stage of a game then not another?

And worse, while they review and draw lines for minutes, they allow off the ball incidents, diving and more to be overlooked.

Either use it for everything or don't use it all.

They need to keep it as it is this season though and change at the end otherwise it could prove unfair as you just know that with that instruction there will be a load of offside goals now allowed.

There will be no change this season for the reasons you have explained but I expect a change for next season.

It would seem that VAR has turned out to be to accurate for a lot of people’s tastes.
So why not just get rid of the use of lines to calculate the exact position of all concerned.? Instead take the pictures, use the naked eye, and if it’s not clear and obviously off side to the eye of two out of three officials, including the ref. Then it’s not?

I suspect there will be a change to "Clear and obvious" in relation to offsides but of course there will be debate as to what is deemed "Clear and obvious" !
We cannot proceed with the current situation.

That has been the subject of many a rant ,ever since the offside rules were first devised. It will never change .
Just checking if a piece of the attacker ,significant to the average eye, can be identified, should be fair. It will never satisfy everyone but you would have the pictures to justify the decision .
What we have now is thought to be accurate ,but minute, to the degree ,that many believe it shouldn’t count enough to wipe out what in every other respect is a perfectly good goal.
Luckily VAR is adaptable, if the rules are clarified, it should not be a problem. While they are at it, get rid of disallowing perfectly good goals , because the ball has hit a hand/arm without it being deliberate.
