Stokes is a little over rated but he is actually good enough for test cricket.....and more importantly he was always selected as an all rounder who could properly perform both disciplines home and away. Ali can't bowl successfully on foreign wickets and is better as a one day player and he's 31......the fact that we still have people who want to block the development of youngsters for a failed pick like Ali is unfortunate. If Rashid is going to commit to four day cricket they should take him and Bess to Ski Lanka. We don't need Ali.....We have the Currans, Stokes and Woakes....though I'd only take Sam Curran and Stokes myself. We need to be investing and developing specialist batsman and bowlers. Moeen a 'failed pick' ?????????? He has just outwitted the Indian captain, Kohli, and effectively won the series against the World's number one team. Listen to E.W.Stuk in future. You lost the argument and can't take it. There is no fool like an old fool.

It's quite amusing to me that you and Stuk agree on this. He's in 'good' judgement company here and I'm happy to see you agree with him. When Ali's statistics on tour again prove....once again, that he's a poor pick....I'm going to have fun reminding you who the fool is. As for India's away test record....they being number one is almost entirely built upon home form. However, unfortunately I feel they have been more competitive than we would have been over there.

Theres less than 2 between their batting averages and less that 6 between their bowling averages. Who is this youngster he's blocking the route of? Bess isn't the best spinner at his county. Leach has taken 7 wickets today while Bess hardly got a bowl and no wickets. Rashid isn't going to play county championship so he won't be going to Sri Lanka. Ed Smith said this series is a one off when he was recalled. We need a spinner, Ali is the best option right now and for Sri Lanka.

God knows how the real E.W.Swanton would have reacted at the sight of Moeen Ali lining up for England !! Probably had an apopletic fit and exploded into a thousand pieces. Not only a fuzzy wuzzy and but even worse left-handed. OMG! The Empire at risk, 'Carry on up The Khyber!' If you ever went to the golf club, cricket or tennis, during Stirling's time, you would be viewed with mild distaste as a 'leftie' if you suffered from left-handedness. Now they are all over us and breed like rabbits. We need a cricket brexit to take back control from 'lefties'. Is that the real reason for Cookie retiring he looks ok to me. Root is a right hander I am quite suspicious of him, is that a Stalinist gleam in his eye?

You are comparing them as all rounders and one is clearly better than the other. Stokes is good enough, Ali isn't....and definitely not overseas. Originally posted by Stuk

Personally I think Bess has the mental make up to succeed. You do love to pick out individual performances instead of career averages don't you........Stoneman just made a big century the other week....shall we repick him as well? Like I say, we will comment on how well Ali does on Ski Lankan wickets as a 31 year old.

Take out the last Ashes and it's less than 3. And spinners from outside of the sub-continent almost always have higher averages than seam bowlers. See Warne and McGrath for example. The call has been made on Rashid, he wont be selected for tests again unless he goes back to playing county championship. "Leach can't bat at all" - You're the one who wants specialist batsmen and bowlers. Make your mind up. I'm a supporter of the team, while you just think your opinion is fact. It ain't. 31 isn't old in cricket, not even close to it. Edited by Stuk (04 Sep 2018 7.08pm)

Let's take out his most successful season at home and then look at his averages. Absurd poor logic. The whole point about 'averages' is that they provide the balanced picture. Edited by Stuk (04 Sep 2018 7.08pm) Well, Cook is retiring at 33, Vaughan retired at 34. Reflexes go at different rates at different ages for batsman. Moeen is mainly meant to be a batsman and 31 at 32 runs is a poor return over fifty odd tests. I think we should be investing in new young talent. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Sep 2018 8.17pm)
