Before people get too self righteous, lets not overlook the report of the public inquiry into Bloody Sunday:

"The British government Tuesday released a damning report into the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, placing blame overwhelmingly on the British soldiers who killed 14 people in Northern Ireland that day.
The 1972 shootings at a civil rights march in Londonderry hardened anti-British sentiments in Northern Ireland, according to analysts, and led to many fresh recruits to the Irish Republican Army. Three decades of violence followed, known as The Troubles, in which almost 3,000 people died.

There was some provocation by the Irish Republican Army in Derry on that day, but nothing that justified the shootings of civilians, the report found.
British paratroopers on that day had no reason to believe they were under threat from the victims, gave no warnings before firing, and lied to the far-reaching official inquiry into the seminal event, the inquiry concluded.
Only one casualty was associated with the IRA, and he was probably not posing a threat when he was shot fatally, the report found.

Members of the British Army fired more than 100 rounds in violation of orders issued to every British soldier serving in Northern Ireland at the time, the report found.

"Some members of our armed forces acted wrongly ... and for that, on behalf of the government, indeed on behalf of our country, I am deeply sorry," British Prime Minister David Cameron said after the release of the long-awaited report.

...report found no indication the soldiers were firing at people they thought were posing a threat or that they missed, the report said.
"All the casualties were either the intended target of the soldiers or the result of shots fired indiscriminately," it states.
And the soldiers in Derry that day who were interviewed by the inquiry lied in their testimony, the report added.
"Many of these soldiers have knowingly put forward false accounts in order to seek to justify their firing," it said."

Of course troops were sent to Northern Ireland in the first place to protect Catholics. The IRA then attacked the troops.
Of course Bloody Sunday was a bad incident, but no doubt Adams and McGuiness were cheered by it because of the propaganda benefits they could reap from it.

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

It's marvelous that we have such fair minded, unbiased and even handed posters.

It warms my heart.

You acted for a para! I assume you mean a parachute regiment soldier rather than a paramilitary terrorist - good grief, how many years has now served in prison? I bet you were just like those 'defence' lawyers at the Moscow Show Trials.

and I have been referring to what paras told me they felt at the time.Who knows better about that, them or you?

Your first post "you and your like have no idea what those soldiers had in their mind the danger they must have felt.Easy to condem from the dining tables of Islington" was plain silly...trying to be clever but rebounding in on you...maybe think before trying to have a silly pop next time? Anyway, time to move on..

What truth?

That conflict results in death and injury?

It is interesting though that despite all the murdering of civilians, policeman and soldiers that occurred during the troubles, some always want to focus on this event in particular.

Exactly that's my point, and without reavling what he said,I'm sure it must have been something on the lines of sheer terror and confusion...if you bothered to read my first line of my first post,I stated that a lot of innocent lives were lost that day.
Instead you were to busy trying to belittle me and insult me.
