Cameron caves in and agrees to take 25,000 extra Syrian refugees.

He's taking them from UN border camps.......He better be careful as too who he's letting in.

Typical Cameron.....Makes a decision that still means the left hate him.....Nothing other than an EU agreement would satisfy them......Makes a decision that ensures that most of the right detest him even more.

Another twenty five thousand more to house.....Good luck to anyone here trying to get affordable housing.

Very few people actually care about you. Many on the left just support actions that make it harder for you.

Hundreds of thousands of net immigration into this country is an unsustainable policy.

I agree with most of this. The left generally do support policies that are actually harmful to ordinary working people in this country. It is a sort of misplace patriotism. They cannot be patriotic about their own country as of course they see the UK, the USA and Israel as the root of all evil. So they are fervently patriotic about people and countries that fit their politically correct worldview.

Or....those of a self-centred, mean-spirited, somewhat ruthless, emotionally stunted, unkind, non-generous persuasion now have nothing in common with the UK and the British sense of fair play having been caressed a bit too much by far-right politics.

Please don't do what you accuse others of doing. For the record nowhere in the entire thread have I said that there is no difference between someone who fights and someone who doesn't. I suspect you know that, which is likely why you made this statement again and again above for no reason, faux aghast.

It obviously depends on the conflict in question. In some scenarios you'd be rather foolish to fight, in others the very opposite. With regard to the Syria situation I just pointed out that there is bravery in both staying, but also in leaving because of the huge risks and responsibility involved in either choice. I'm not saying they are identical in every way. You're the one stating that these people are cowards for leaving and that you doubt their worth. I just disagree with that one dimensional view of them.

Edited by oldcodger (03 Sep 2015 10.12pm)

Oh so you say that there is a difference between those that fight and those that flee.....But that you don't think that this is a difference in bravery as you....presumably regard both choices as equally brave.

One is obviously far far braver than another and hence as an option for the common good....But that goes against your position to state that

You accused me of arguing against myself in an earlier post and now you are jumping around upon a pin trying not to say the obvious.

Foolish to fight? Yeah, all those French and British soldiers who died fighting to slow the German advance while we cleared our troops off the Dunkirk beaches......So were they 'foolish' to fight?.....What nonsense. Churchill choosing to fight the Nazis, when all was against us.....Foolish was it.

Maybe foolish to fight for those who have little allegiance to a national cause. To those that look to maximum self interest as the first port of call.

But foolish?..As equal in worth to those that don't fight...Na, warm words...No these people are heroes....And they are never...never equal in worth to young fit males who chose to flee.

These are people placed into extremely difficult situations.....Jamie made a good point that there are complex situations where fighting would be difficult. This is true, but I can't address every situation but when we are talking over many many thousands of fit young men I think the generalism stands.

I get that, but my opinion has changed slightly since having kids. Now I would 100% put my kids' welfare above the country, so if I thought doing a runner with them would make them safe, I'd probably make that call, but I agree it's tough to reconcile with the fact that many of the people travelling are young males alone.

I understand what they are doing, but being told that I shouldn't state a negative observation or worth upon young fit males choosing to risk all for a big pay off......Well, I regard that as some in the pro camp trying to control the narrative.

Hardly a big payoff, 36.50 a week. You do realize that prior to the civil war Syria was a fairly affluent country with a fairly decent standard of living, employment, education etc not some s**ty slum hole tribal backwater.

Personally I think its unpatriotic and unBritish to not offer shelter and safety to refugees and the victims of political oppression. Certainly since the second world war, has had a policy of refugee and opposition to oppression and granted safe refuge to those at risk of persecution from oppressive regimes, even when those individuals have not shared British views or values.

This isn't immigration, its Asylum. To confuse the to is obfuscation to a political agenda, when the issue is a humanitarian one.

Also for the record, how do you know these individuals haven't fought in the civil war against IS or Assad. The 'Free Syrian Forces' have suffered a loss of a lot of territory and a lot of their forces have been overrun.

This is a civil war, there are no front lines etc. When factions fall apart or units can no longer fight they disband, and typically flee (or get murdered). None of the sides are taking prisoners. If your on the losing side, your options are flee, hide or die.

Jamie, outside of Damascus Syria always has and always will be a s*** hole, this idea that it was a Terry and June based Middle Eastern Kingston upon Thames is way way way off the mark.

Sure Damascus was fairly affluent, but it hasnt been for a long long time, the average wage is now about £200 A MONTH. Now considering income based JSA is paid at 105.65 PER WEEK if your a couple, and £65 if your single. Then it starts to become clear why Migrants are comming here does it not.

That's before housing and child benefit as well.

Why do you think people are causing havoc in Hungry to get to Germany, I'll tell you why, they pay even more.

Where is the help from the rich Islamic countries? My guess is that if the refugees try to enter Kuwait, Saudi or the Emirates they would be met by tanks and heavy artillery. The conundrum is that they want nothing to do with their fellow Muslims, yet they continue to espouse the religion.
MI5 has its hands full monitoring radicals from this religion and they must despair at the prospect of an increased workload.
Sorry,no more please.Humanitarian aid yes, but from what I can see on tv its a pick and choose type of situation and not just a flight from fear.
Once in,would they ever go back when the situation has been stabilised in their respective countries? Not on your life!

The belief that Germany is relaxing its policy is bound to lead to a level of migration that surpasses anything seen so far.

Refugees and economic migrants will be thrown together in a rush.Very many more will reach Italy and Greece and eventually it is conceivable that the front-line EU nations will stop trying to enforce the rules, and will simply wave new arrivals across their territory, tempting even more into attempting the perilous crossings.

Except they don't get Job Seekers Allowance. Whilst awaiting decision on your asylum application you receive 36.95 per week for a single person, and a couple with two children will receive the highest figure which is 178 a week (for all four people).

Housing benefit is paid, but having been unemployed and in receipt of housing benefit, it goes on rent (and in some cases is paid directly to the landlord or council).

No ones living the life of Riley on 44.50 a week budget.

Sure Germany has offered 800,000 places to refugees at the Hungary station, but how many people are willing to board an 'immigration train' to Germany, to a centre where they'll be expected to take a shower.

In another week they'll have 800,000 more places....
