What appears to be emerging is that Moeen Ali is more potent in England and Ashwin more potent in India. In England the ball tends to grip on the surface unlike in India and loop and flight are important. And it is being reported that Ali prefers to be the second spinner.

The team for the final test may be different to what was originally envisaged now that Cookey has announced his retirement. They may bring Rory Burns in to have a look at him on his home ground with Keaton Jennings dropping to number 3 and perhaps leave Adil Rachid out

Ali is as useless overseas as your cricketing judgement is here. I predict, if selected to tour, he'll have another poor winter.
He's got similar career figures to Ben Stokes. Even more so if you take out the last Ashes series, which one played in and one didn't. I wouldn't call him a failure either, and he hasn't been asked to bat in every position possible at various times. Hopefully it's as useless as your prediction upon his reselection.

Burns is busy piling on more runs for Surrey again. Pope will also play the first two days of that match and then join up with England, which is a bit of an oddity. I think Rashid will be replaced, probably by Pope or Woakes.

It's a shame as it would be better to blood a new opener against India at The Oval than in Sri Lanka. Pope's day will come but it's one two and three that we need to concentrate on as we have an embarrassment of riches from four down to eight

Bumble wanted them to replace Cook for this match after he announced his retirement, which would be very harsh as he deserves a send off, but I see the point. It makes it more likely that Jennings will still be in there come the Sri Lanka tour. It's a shame Hameed has been so poor for his county after his impressive, but short, stint for England. Burns will surely have to come in for that tour? What is going on at Taunton? They're nearly into the 3rd innings of the day. 19 wickets have gone down so far.

That Old Etonian time-serving toff James Anderson is drinking in the last chance saloon. Hasn't scored a test century errrm well, ever? As for his pathetic attempts at bowling well my old granny could do better with her arm in a sling. ( Boycs).
Ps. E.W.Stanton bought me an ice cream at the oval in 1959.

I'm a Worcestershire supporter and I don't want Ali selected anymore - as it ruins our season and he is never as good for England. He does have the odd good England match though.

Their averages aren't similar and Stokes has actually performed successfully in Australia unlike Ali. He has also batted as high as four I think. Stokes is a little over rated but he is actually good enough for test cricket.....and more importantly he was always selected as an all rounder who could properly perform both disciplines home and away. Ali can't bowl successfully on foreign wickets and is better as a one day player and he's 31......the fact that we still have people who want to block the development of youngsters for a failed pick like Ali is unfortunate. If Rashid is going to commit to four day cricket they should take him and Bess to Ski Lanka. We don't need Ali.....We have the Currans, Stokes and Woakes....though I'd only take Sam Curran and Stokes myself. We need to be investing and developing specialist batsman and bowlers.
