Two examples across two decades... it’s not ‘the reality’ - there are tens of teams who have come up and stayed up playing far far better than we do now. We’ve bloody done it ourselves on numerous occasions, so why are we making out it’s impossible or unrealistic?

Wigan also won an FA cup, by the way, and stayed up for 8 years with a vastly inferior budget and playing squad to what we do now - not a bad example at all.

It’s telling none of those defending Hodgson can tackle the specific criticisms, just peddle this nonsense narrative that the only alternative is relegation.

We’re all fans, but this theme that anyone criticising Hodgson after a season this bad is ‘entitled’ or doesn’t know what you they’re talking about is pathetic - I’d suggest its those who are happy with what we’re being served up with the 10th highest wage bill in the division that are delusional.

We are heading towards a relegation unless something changes - the numbers we’ve served up this year are completely unsustainable. Any basic level of analysis would show you that.

Good points, and well made. ^^^
It just seems that today, football is following business models.(and there are different business models out there to choose from).
And the manager can only work with what he's given and under instruction from The Board. Something fans aren't privvy to.
It's like being sent to a scrapyard by your boss. What is the brief ? to build a Formula 1 car , or to build a go-kart ?

I disengage, I turn the page.

Thanks.

I take your point on the constraints Hodgson is under, and I recognise the strength of the squad and lack of investment is a huge contributing factor to our performances, but even recognising that I can’t get on board with the thinking that Hodgson is even close to getting the best out of what we have.

‘there are tens of teams who have come up and stayed up playing far far better than we do now’

Who exactly? I can hardly think of any? Sure there’s clubs that have come up and played nicer football, but stayed up for any length of time

During our years in the premiership there are hardly any clubs that have stayed up apart from normal top 6 and Everton

If you can think of any, then I imagine they may have spent a lot of money. Hodgson has hardly had any

He may have a more talented squad than previously , but the competition has as well, as generally speaking others clubs have been given money

Comparisons to Pulis and Allardyce have been mentioned, but they were given money

Hodgson is doing a great job with very little support

Leicester's net spend over the last 3 seasons hasn't been that large in PL terms, only around £65 Million.
During that period they received significant sums from the sales of Maguire, Mahrez and Drinkwater.

I would like to see a future without Hodgson although I can recognise that the club hasn’t spent large sums in the market and he has worked within limits so it seems reasonable to cut him some slack.
What doesn’t seem reasonable is to call him a legend who can do no wrong.
I still have seen no cogent argument for why he plays the same defensive way in every game , even against the weaker teams.
Surely even his most fervent supporters would like us to be a tad more adventurous against the likes of Burnley, Brighton and Bournemouth.
Hodgson was at it again yesterday in the press conference yesterday saying we need someone to put away all the chances away that we create.
He must be watching a different game to me as I can’t see all these mysterious chances.

Some more saddo stats (surely I have better things to do - ah I can go to the pub now!

Since the inception of the Premier league 42 clubs have been relegated from and/or promoted to the Prem.

Of the founder members of the Prem, the following have been relegated not to return (as yet)
Oldham
Wimbledon
Sheffield Wednesday
Coventry
Leeds (should make it back this year unless they do a Leeds of last year)

We are one of a number of yo-yo teams
we Have 4 relegations and 4 promotions (we were founder members hence the 4-4).
Others with at least 3 of each are:

Norwich 4R and 4 P (founder member)
Middlesbrough 4 and 3
Leicester 3 and 4
Sunderland 4 and 4
QPR 3 and 3
WBA 4 and 4
Birmingham 3 and 3
Hull City 3 and 3

There are two teams who have been promoted but not relegated (yet) both recent promotions
Brighton
Bournemouth

Looking at the yo-yo teams we are doing better than all apart from today's opponents.

What's all this about? I suppose perspective at the end of the day. We can easily join those other yo-yo clubs who are currently in a lower league.

I personally think that Roy is doing the best he can with the players he has at his disposal. He has not really been supported with investment money to improve the squad and that has to be down to Parish & Freedman. when we have spent big on players (Benteke & Sakho) they have not really lived up to expectations. In most instances Roy gets given older players in the twilight of their careers or loan players neither of which are long term team investments. We were lucky with Cahill, he still has quality but probably only came to us because he did not want to move out of London. I do not know why but both Freedman and Parish seem incapable of coming with an investment plan for the teams future. Unless the latter improves then relegation is a real possibility in the 20/21 season as the last two matches have clearly demonstrated.

Are you sure he gets given them or does he ask for them? I’m not saying either is correct or incorrect.

You have two choices to improve your team, spend big or buy wisely from the lower levels. The first is not permitted by our tight wad owners, the second. Dougie either isn’t producing the goods or Roy is poo pooing them because they are not established players.

Allardyce took far longer to turn things round than expected and the football at home apart from Arsenal and Hull was total dogsH1t.
I remember beating Boro and Watford at home in consecutive games having mustered one shot on target over the 180 minutes.

I still think both Allardyce and Pardew did a good job overall but l agree we should’t forget how much money they spent and how uncomfortable it was. I thought we were gone at more than one point that season.

I notice you give no examples. Who do you think we should be emulating? Personally, if it’s the price of staying up then I’m happy with Roy’s approach. It might not be pretty, but after many years of watching this team I am enjoying seeing us as a regular feature in the Premiership. That will do our long term reputation a great deal of good and we will pick up fans as a result. But I accept that it won’t last forever and have sympathy for the viewpoint that puts style and entertainment before mere survival. It’s just that I’ve had already enough years of ‘entertainment’ in the lower leagues to last me a lifetime!
