Multiply that by 38 matches. Yes,Bournemouth got relegated because they were poor defrnsively. But their attack wasn't that great either this year, with Callum Wilson not being the same, Ryan Fraser playing rarely as a starter and youngster Harry Wilson not being able to save them on his own. Also, injuries of David Brooks, Groenveld and many times Stanislas gave them few options. But usually you get a higher chance of staying up with a good attack than with a good defence. It's mathematics. Of course, defence should not be neglected either. But it's better to play for 3 points even if it's once every 2 games than hold out for 2 draws.
W D L whereas If you are leading 1-0 with an attacking strategy you will not feel as comfortable as if that lead is with a defensive strategy. It is well documented that we are the team with the fewest goals to stay up and the first team to fail to score 3 goals in any match and still stay up and yet we were safe before lockdown. Furthermore, if we exclude the away game against Citeh where we led, fell behind and then drew, there were only two games where we took the lead and dropped points (Wolves at home and So'ton away) 4 points dropped, whereas we came back from losing positions to gain wins in both games against West Ham and draws against Arsenal (twice), Brighton, Norwich and Spurs (11 points gained from losing positions excluding the Citeh game). How many points did teams like Bournemouth, West Ham and Villa drop from winning positions because of their dodgy defences? In summary I would argue that a strategy based on a sound defence will over time prove more successful than one based on attack.

Personally I don’t see what is wrong with having a good attack and defence. It doesn’t have to be one or the other

Roy Hodgson's ideal world - 38 0-0 results, 38 points, 17th position.

A bit left field, but, a good piece & under the radar
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Interesting article. Strikes me as being one decent championship job away from getting into the big time.

Professor Roy is a class act. I’m confident that with or without Zaha we will be nowhere near relegation. We’re not great to watch as we lack creative players, but this is a results business and we’re hard to beat. This is why we keep staying up. We saw that when we do have a bit of creativity with the likes of RLC, Batman and Cabaye that Roy is capable of attractive football. The run of 7 defeats was pretty dire but we were mostly up against the big boys who were fighting for European qualification. Nothing to play for in empty grounds probably my gets a bit demoralising for the players. The signing of Ferguson and the emergence of Mitchell are big positives. Eze looks like it could happen. We’re a good striker away from a decent season again. Roy is at the top of my wish list

Because they had little provision.

It is so easy to wish Roy away, to see greener grass on the other side. I have done it from time to time too. But we are spending so little when others are spending so much and, as has been pointed out, when we had RLC we played some lovely stuff. Fulham played lovely stuff under him. I suspect you give Roy 4 players he needs and we fly. What I am less sure of is that we/he can identify and recruit those 4 players. Edited by Ginger Pubic Wig (05 Aug 2020 8.18pm)
