The IRA were all but neutralised and McGuinness knew that. He was given an a chance to become 'respectable' and he took it.

Possibly a little more nuanced than that.

BBC News 2007:

"Army paper says IRA not defeated
Army concedes for first time it did not win the battle against the IRA.

An internal British army document examining 37 years of deployment in Northern Ireland contains the claim by one expert that it failed to defeat the IRA.
The admission is contained in a discussion document released by the Ministry of Defence after a request under the Freedom of Information Act.
The 100 page document analyses in detail the army's role over 37 years.

It focuses on specific operations and gives an overview of its performance.
The six-month study, covering the period 1968-2005, was prepared under the direction of the then chief of general staff, General Sir Mike Jackson.

The document, obtained by the Pat Finucane Centre, points to a number of mistakes, including internment and highlights what lessons have been learnt.

It describes the IRA as "a professional, dedicated, highly skilled and resilient force", while loyalist paramilitaries and other republican groups are described as "little more than a collection of gangsters".

It concedes for the first time that it did not win the battle against the IRA - but claims to have "shown the IRA that it could not achieve its ends through violence".

I suppose it's all down to definitions as per usual.

Or in your case, myopia.

Oh ouch, I'm so terribly offended.

Your right, The IRA could have carried on bombing until we surrendered and reunited Ireland.
Of course we would have had to ignore all the intelligence we were getting from informants but still.

I'm just glad we achieved peace even if it meant murdering scumbags got off free.

I don't really see a distinction. Paisley was almost certainly involved with the UVF in the same way that Adams was with the PIRA, and was involved in the formation of a number of Paramilitary loyalist groups.

I dare say his hands were no cleaner than Adams or McGuiness.

You dare say? What evidence to you have that Paisley was actively involved in terrorism as McGuiness and Adams were?

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

Paisley formed 'the third force' to fight the IRA.

He claimed to have 15,000 armed members - whatever happened to it can't remember but it was under direct rule so ruled out in some way.

Erm,just a small point to that glowing tribute you put to the ira....they were the biggest gangsters in NI,and to a certain extent still are,the one who has just died...(good riddance),has a son who is heavily involved in drugs.

I'll wager that when he did enter the gates of hell Bobby Sands had already eaten his welcome basket.
