Whilst the interview was obviously carefully planned and thought out prior to it taking place, the main thing I took away from it was that it felt like Parish had actually learnt from his mistakes in the past. It was good to hear him acknowledge that our transfer strategy, whilst probably a necessity at that point, isn't sustainable and they are making a concerted effort to stick to a new plan. They have to get this summer right though as we are at a tipping point of either progress or relegation. The Dougie comment was daft though. If I'd known a Director of Footballs remit was to make sure we didn't sign players we didn't think were right, I would have gone in a much different career path! Why should you be offered the position? Don't sign Jesse Lingard, he's useless and a total Berkshire. You're hired!

Would have liked to hear about the current relationship with the Americans and how it's all working out with our major shareholders?

I agree with Willo in as much as Parish is damned if he does / doesn't in terms of communication. As to the content...well there wasn't much in there that we didn't already know. Not true as there is informative communication and there is PR fluff and Parish took the latter option saying as you have commented that he didn't say anything that we didn't already know

As someone already said, I expect he can’t talk about the Americans, or getting future money from them ahead of tv money, cos that’s all it’s going to ever be if we’re being honest, is going to be even more difficult. Stadium redevelopment? If we were serious we’d have bought the land already after 2 or 3 years is it of nothing. We need new owners and I haven’t heard or read anything to change my mind.

Football clubs get bombarded with agents singing the praises of their players in order to facilitate transfers.Furthermore there are scouting 'Tools' used widely by clubs which can identify players for each position and those in recruitment perhaps suggest certain players they believe will help the club.Managers can also have their targets. Perhaps, just perhaps, Parish was asserting that the 'Director Of Football' has to form a judgement and can reject suggestions he believes is not right for the club.Maybe Parish's comments were made in this context.

I'm not disputing that we get offered lots of players and as a club we have to separate the wheat from the chaff, but I'd argue that is the job of the scouting team and that we should already know the majority of players offered to us. To say that the DoF role is to reject players and praise them for it, especially after having the record he has for the last few windows, is ridiculous. The DoF role should be much more advanced and strategic than stopping us signing players not right. They should be putting together an overall strategy and vision for the club, finding the right management team and players that can work in harmony to deliver on their end goal. If you've hired a DoF and the main positive you can say is he stopped us from getting someone we were offered who wasn't right, then something has clearly gone wrong. Sometimes it feels that Parish is too starstruck by players of yesteryear and would rather hire players he supported growing up than people who know what they are doing. Edited by JohnB (21 Feb 2020 10.47am) Parish did actually assert that what goes on behind the scenes is not seen by the supporters and that Freedman works like a trojan to deliver. He did mention about signing the right players but clearly there is more to his remit than this aspect of his job.I suspect the TORs of a 'Director of Football' can vary from club to club. I cannot comment on this but clearly the interview has not had the desired effect with some supporters concluding it was just PR and 'Spin'. Parish however did provide an update on the ground and academy development, where the AWB funds were directed and the situation apropos the Hodgson contract as well as the transfer policy and an explanation as to why January targets weren't signed. In terms of external investment, supporters have been yearning for additional funding and he did assert that such investment was still being sought. Finally he asserted that supporters are not in receipt of the facts of the workings behind the scenes and was fulsome in his praise for Freedman so perhaps the message is "Lay off Dougie" and perhaps "Lay off me" ! Edited by Willo (21 Feb 2020 10.03am) Well put Willo as it is true that we supporters do NOT know what is actually going on in the background and some continue to slag him off as if they know it all. SP came across as a Palace fan that wants only the best for our club and I honestly believe he does know what he is doing. I agree with him on the fact "You do not just go out and splash the cash on players just to appease our fans. That is not the way to run a football club and he knows it. Many fans are too eager to throw insults his way and also at Dougie who in my opinion is doing a good job by not just going out and buying players we do not really need to buy. SP stands by him and so do I as I think they both know what they are doing.
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Reading between the lines, it looks like we have seen the end of marquee signings like Bentenke and Sakho with perhaps a greater focus on players as assets which can be moved on at a profit. If this is the path we're taking, and attempts to sign Ferguson and Kouame (and the likes of Sorloth, Meyer and Jach in the past) suggest it is, then this will be a real test of Dougie and his team. Previously we have always seemed to go for experienced PL players in the main, but these don't generally result in profit, but they have helped us to stay in the PL where other teams have dropped through the trapdoor. Being positive, if we could sign three or four promising players in the summer to integrate into a very experienced squad then we could begin a period of transition which could be very fruitful. The last window was perhaps unlucky given two of our main targets were written off by injuries, but you would have to ask given the Kouame one was known before the window opened why was there not an alternative in place? Or was that Tosun? Also, he states that they didn't want to look at second or third choices but Hodgson previously confirmed we were trying to sign KWP. Was Ferguson intended as a left-back, or were we planning on having three right-backs? He does have a touch of corporate smugness about him in this video, which strikes me as different to the old days when he seemed less polished. I still think he has the club's interests at heart, but it also seems clear we need some deeper pockets if they can be found.

What some fans probably want to know, although Parish is under no obligation to divulge such information, includes among other things
