That, depsite being fit and fine to play, Connor was faking an injury so he wouldn't have to play...? And now that his contract is up, he's decided to play so he can earn a new contract? And somehow the medical team/physios are on board with this? Or is he fooling them too? Sorry, just want to make sure I'm clear on what you're insinuating. Please correct me if I've misunderstood.

I’m suggesting that Connor has all the qualities to be a brilliant player - except the most important one - the right mentality. I’m not disagreeing that he has genuinely been injured, or that an element of bad luck is involved. But that desperation to play and commitment to do the hard work that is needed to get back seems to lacking. Some players are happy to do the bare minimum and collect their salary every month Connor Wickham is one of them in my view.

Who would CHOOSE to avoid the excitement of first team football, the adulation, the sponsorship money, the chunk of the £30M + sale to a £5m+ a year ECL club if he succeeded etc? That people even suggest this..?

But it doesn't make their knees any stronger does it? I totally understand the frustration with players who miss games with tiny niggles when they could push through the pain barrier a bit more (an accusation levelled, fairly or otherwise, at Daniel Sturridge) but Wickham has had a series of medium to long term injuries. That has nothing to do with his mentality whatsoever. Only the club doctors and physios will know if he could have pushed himself any harder during rehab, and for folk on here, who have no access to that information, to connect his time out injured with his mental attitude is grossly unfair.

Only the club doctors and physios will know if he could have pushed himself any harder during rehab, and for folk on here, who have no access to that information, to connect his time out injured with his mental attitude is grossly unfair. There was an interview with Wayne Bridge recently where he said he was put out in the cold by a manager after complaining about a niggle before a game. Thought the manager was absolutely in the right to do it. There's a seen in invictus where Nelson Mandela asks Francois Piennar about an injury. Piennar replies "to be honest, you are never 100% fit". That conversation would have happened prior to 1995, so Piennar wouldn't have even been professional. Fictional, but goes to show that professional players need to accept they are likely to be constantly carrying injuries. Particularly as they age. There seems to be a worrying amount of players that walk of the pitch with signs of only minor discomfort. However, this may not apply to Wickham. I'm surprised a guy of his size gets so many injuries still. Perhaps unsurprising that his knee was a problem, other setbacks are questionable. I'd really question our strength and conditioning training. Something doesn't seem right with the amount of injuries we get, its not simply down to age.

There are players who want to play football at all costs. There are players who are happy to sit on the sidelines forever whilst raking in a lovely salary. There are no benefits for playing well or for appearances unless you happen to have a rare contract that specifies this. Like people in all walks of life you have hard workers and shirkers. Make your own mind up where he fits into that spectrum.

It may well do, as that overarching mental attitude has the potential to directly affect the level of work put in and the compliance with do’s and don’ts, during treatment and rehabilitation. Some will work harder and be more committed to looking after themselves than others and that will directly affect their bodies and their recovery rates. There have also been numerous studies conducted on the very subject of how mental attitude can affect treatment and recovery, furthermore highlighting that the two can be intrinsically linked. I’m not saying there has been anything wrong with Connors attitude, only that Elphers40 expressed opinion cannot be dismissed out of hand, because he may well be right.

I haven’t suggested he has conned anyone although you seem keen to put those words in my mouth? He may well be at the, ‘wants to play football at all costs’ end of the spectrum. There are players out there though who will do as little as possible to earn as much as possible.
