We have started to refresh the squad with youth, albeit two years too late. Moreover its probably going to take another couple of years before we see a signifacnt drop in squad age. The question is will we still be in the premiership while this happens. While fearing each upcomming season, the past suggests there are ususally 2, if not 3, teams that are evidently worse than us. Touch wood this will hold true going forward. And yes, like most of the premiership, i'm looking downwards not upwards... survival takes priority. We brought in one of own, who put his faith in experienced players and tired n tested tactics to stablise a sinking ship. We have done this. This short term measure is now evolving into a long term view. Although its too early to say whether he can take us forward with a younger squad, I am doubtful. Sorloth left a broken man. Shorn of confidence, after being overlooked for a misfiring Benteke, he was given piecemeal oppotunities to deliver. Alex Meyer showed creative glimpses of what he could do but didnt fit into The Hodgson Way. Now seemingly frozen out, again after being shorn of confidence, of team crying out for creativity in Wilf's absence. Instead, we are offering another year's extension to Benteke. At least we know what we get for £100k a week here. I hope Im proved wrong and Hodgson enables a succesful transition but like I said, I am doubtful

We really need to be addressing the issue of players out of contact in the summer during the January window. Those players cost roughly £100m to assemble and will cost £150m to replace. Benteke's contract renewal isn't too bad considering an unproven replacement will be £20m on the same wage. Although I can see us signing Bats too. We need to keep Benteke, Reidewald, Townsend and Guiata to avoid a hole in the first team. Given Dann and Cahill's age I'd opt for keeping Sakho. Would like to keep Meyer, but doubt he wants to stay, and we have a lot of poor midfielders.

I am questioning the rationale of extending the contract of a 30 year old striker who has constantly failed to deliver in front of goal season on season and rewarding his dismal and failed efforts with an extension to a lucrative contract. We will be a 'Laughing stock' in football if Benteke's contract is extended.

I truly believe that Sorloth could have amassed a greater total, Benteke is that useless! Talk of keeping him must be Stockholm Syndrome associated.
