The story is still so confused that some are saying that it was a row between the killer and someone else and she intervened. No official word from the police as to whether anyone else was involved.

If she intervened that makes her more heroic in my book. Most people just cross the street when there is trouble. Most people don't bother to do anything constructive with politics they just shout at Question Time or post on blog sites. MPs (even Tories well a lot of them) go into politics with good intentions unlike the careerist hacks that shape opinion and slag off our elected representative (MPS and Councillors)on a daily basis.

It emerged that Cox was with her assistant Fazila Aswat, as she died on Thursday. Aswat’s father, Ghulam Maniyar, told ITV News that his daughter held Cox in her arms as she bled.

“She said, ‘Jo get up’, but she [Jo] said, ‘No, my pain is too much, Fazila’, and I think those are the last words Jo spoke,” he said.

He said his daughter tried to hit the attacker with her handbag “but he tried to go at her … He came back again and shot her [Jo] again twice.”

the guy wasnt even at the shop or in the area at the time. early reports unfortunately for him placed him there when he wasnt. multiple eye witnesses have said they heard it, some people said they didnt. this man has said to lbc that 'he has not spoken to anyone who heard that phrase' and that he is very concerned for his own personal safety at being linked to the claim he heard 'britain first'. hence the poster. Thats the full picture. the police appear to believe this man was probably a far right extremist with mental health issues who targeted the MP. even if he did shout the term obviously britain first have a great many members who would never dream of supporting his actions.

Can you support this claim? No one else in his community reported him to the Police.

for sake of balance even organisations that tend to attract nutcases still have plenty of members that are more growl than bite. That said I would rightfully expect the government to clamp down now. the excusing or reasoning away of any brand of extremism, muslim, right wing or otherwise is reprehensible. anyone choosing to go down the road of becoming affiliated with these groups should expect that they will be watched closely.

Not being deliberately obtuse but why would you not lock up those who have been independently assessed as being mad?

Surely medical science has evolved to an extent that an independent body can assess cases of suspected homicidal lunacy and recommend incarceration for those believed to harbour homicidal thoughts by specialists?

I am sure you possess a billion reasons for why this is wrong. And most of them include insults in some way or manner.

not needed Matthew.

As for medical science assessing cases of homicidal lunacy, I don't know. Maybe the pre cogs from Philip K Dicks Minority report are actually real.
Your suggestion, although a great idea, is unrealistic in real life.

The Mental Health Act 1983 has the powers for people to be "sectioned".

In essence, someone is examined by two or three "professionals",ie doctor and appropriately qualified social worker and detained if necessary for their health and safety or for the protection of other people.

I've seen it in action on a number of occasions and on any analysis its an inherently subjective process trying to balance public safety against private rights and v difficult trying to tell in advance who will "go over the top" and who won't..

One thing is for sure, the resources available in this area have been severely affected by recent years by cuts and a starting point would be to put some serious money back into front line mental health "prevention" services.

Thought provoking reaction to the reaction from Alan Gibbons author.

The media response to the death of Jo Cox is wretched. It is typified by Deborah Orr in the Guardian: “Understanding this tragedy needs nuance, not agendas” and even worse, Matthew Parris in The Times: “The Lesson of Jo Cox’s Death? There isn’t one.” Thomas Mair was a loner, vulnerable, timid, mentally ill, disturbed, deranged, acres of newspaper print tells us. The accumulating evidence that he had been a subscriber to Nazi periodicals, had manuals showing how to make weapons, and had a house stacked with Nazi memorabilia is seen as evidence of psychological disturbance, not political allegiance. Similarly, the role of right wing politicians from Cameron with his ‘swarms’ of immigrants and a ‘bunch of migrants’ to Johnson’s many racialised comments and Farage’s racist poster, is downplayed in the rush to say we have all got to be nice to each other and politicians must not be criticised in case some ‘lone wolf’ is encouraged to act violently.
People quite correctly hesitate to draw firm conclusions too early, but hold on a minute, at the same stage in the Lee Rigby tragedy, the same media had come to the firm conclusion that this was down to political Islam, even though Michael Adebowale also had psychotic incidents. Mental illness is not synonymous with violence. The mentally ill are far more likely to be victims of violence than its perpetrators.
The press has failed to locate Mair’s horrific attack within the narrative of neo-Nazi violence: the US hosted hate sites, Redwatch targeting the Left for attack, the numerous NF, BNP, EDL, Infidels thugs convicted of violent attacks, David Copeland who blew up a pub in Soho, Anders Breivik who slaughtered members of a left wing party in Norway, the Nazis doing time (some from Yorkshire) for having bomb-making equipment in their homes, the Britain First keyboard warriors who pollute the internet with their hate memes. Yes, some of the perpetrators were disturbed, but neo-Nazi violence attracts the violent, obsessive and narcissistic criminals. There is so much evidence to demonstrate this.
That is what has been missing so far in the coverage. Evidence. The media had a duty to explain all the possible roots of this political murder. They do it every time there is a ‘jihadi’ attack and they do it with unhesitating alacrity. There is time for them to inform the public about the far right’s violent history. It is not too late.

Why are you posting this stuff?

All I'm thinking about is how that poor lady suffered in her final moments and the sheer unfathomable cruelty and savagery of the maniac who killed her.

Your little crusade to prove a Nazi uprising is quite pathetic in the circumstances.
No one who did the things that this man did to a helpless woman is sane and I don't give a s*** if he was hiding Adolf Hitler in his en suite.
