Employ some of the Peterborough scouting network ?

Might be another one, Hence my opinion on Gayle, expressed previously years not being top quality. Loads of pace but no awareness. It is definitely more profitable than buying defenders. Also Peterborough tended to be the team with the most goals scored, and almost conceded. Great entertainment. Looks like we have moved in the right direction.. Would be nice if wed could cut the "Peterborough" out of the loop and do it ourselves.

In recent seasons Peterborough signed Ivan Toney for 300K and sold him to Brentford for a fee which could reach £10 Mill.
They also signed Britt Assombalonga for £1.5 Mill and sold him to Nottm Forest for a fee up to £8 Mill plus a 50% sell-on clause.
Dwight Gayle was bought for £500K rising to £750K plus a 20% add-on clause and we bought him for £4.5 Mill plus some add-ons.

So the rumours are Everton are going to sign Townsend, Demarai Gray and Begovic. If they wanted to soften the Everton fans up to the idea of Benitez what a fabulous way of doing it!!!

Good luck to Andros though. A genuinely nice guy and deserves another PL deal. However, he must be pinching himself while using the other hand to send laughing face emojis to Wilf.

Good luck to them, and to Brentford, and whoever else turns a profit by giving players a chance, but not too many players on this list, or the ones Brentford sold, or anyone else for that matter proved themselves to be a premier league player.

When folk call for us to sign the scouting team from x lower league club, I can't help but think three things:

1. The number of lower league and non league players who could make it to the championship is far, far higher than the number who could make it to the Premier league. We need the latter.

2. Peterborough, Brentford or whoever getting to the better lower and non league players before us is not only because we are far less likely to do well from that market than them, it's because generally Premier league teams need championship teams to act as a filter. If a quarter of the players who go from lower levels to the championship end up good enough for the top flight, that's three quarters who don't. For us to have signed the players who stepped up from the championship successfully directly from the lower leagues (so Watkins from Exeter etc) we'd also need to have signed all the ones who weren't good enough. Doesn't work.

3. When we were in the Championship, we DID sign bargains from the lower leagues. The reason we don't do much now is not because we've lost the knack (it's literally the same people now as then), it's because the task has changed significantly.

Agreed. We are rightly, IMO, focussing on young players who are doing it in the Championship, which Eze, Olise and Guehi have done.

I'm really looking forward to this season.

We can't have it both ways. How many posts on here over the last year or two complained that we had an old, moderately performing and slightly overpaid, slow squad with no resale value? Or that the youth players weren't getting a chance?

Not at all.

He was offered what we thought he was worth.

In my opinion his best playing days are well behind him although Cahill would have been useful for his experience when required.

But that doesn't justify meeting his financial demands

Cahill is far to slow look at the Liverpool 7-0. Cahill got 3.91 from the BBC fan vote in thingy.

Yes this sums it up... his experience for the new young CBs would have been great, but it would have to be on our terms. I can't blame him for taking one last shot at glory with Rangers but it will be a loss even if that's just in the dressing room.

Cahill is/was a great player and it would be great to have him again next season if only for the experience he can bring to the squad.
however - for the first time - it seems - we have a structure which we intend to work to and his demands didn't match our expectations.
Great shame but we must cut our cloth - it will be better in the long run - as long as we stay up this season!

I would be surprised if Rangers can match our offer of money, maybe it's the glory or a longer contract?
