Blinkered by your agenda Syd. He's not the Messiah by any means, but he has not contributed as little as you assert. Burnley away and the away end carnage his second goal of the game (the very very late winner if you weren't able to make it up there though the snow) caused comes to mind. I actually would like to see him given a go as a first-choice replacement wide forward as at least he'd show for a through ball and would be much more likely to beat one man and then do something positive like get a shot on target or pull it across rather than think about how many more tricks he could do. He'd be predictable and garbage playing out wide. We'd lose count the amount of times he'd trip over the ball. I just hope we don't lose count the amount of times we try to offload him during this latest contract. He either proves it now in the next 4 months (and that's after being behind Adebayor when he's fit and Wickham when behaving properly) or he sees it how the rest with experience see it. He is not good enough to lead a line. I am losing patience when it's clear he and we would be better off once he tries elsewhere. I am glad SP hasn't allowed him to run his contract down further or completely even and upped his wages by a few quid to protect our asset.

I think we still could do with a couple more but 'need' is a strong word. Our problem at the start of the window was misfiring strikers. The one player we have signed is a striker. We can't sign s*** loads of players for millions just because we have injuries for a few more weeks. We should build the squad sensibly and slowly. We're in a position where players who will enhance the squad and push us up the league are f***ing expensive. Shelvey for £12million?! Berahino bid rejected at £21million?! Lewis Grabban for £7million?! Jordan Rhodes for something like £9million? That's insane. If only we'd kept hold of Grabban.. Good post mate, this has been a great window for us because for once there's been little speculation of our better players moving away. It's settling as a fan to be in this situation for once.

But it's not about spending loads of money on players it's about being realistic and moving with the times. I appreciate parish has got a business head on him but with the new tv money in the summer and our new investment and two seasons in the premiership now we should be able to buy a decent striker as just said we haven't spent anything yet in the window so why ?? If we were in such need of players I.e striker and a defender and creative midfielder why have done nothing ...again

If we are better positioned to sign people when the summer rolls around because the Geordies spaffed all their money on Jonjo Shelvey et al and Norwich wasted all theirs on overpriced forwards then all the better.

Two goals against a relegated team (Burnley), a fantastic goal against Villa...the career night against Liverpool but very little else and certainly not on a consistent basis. In the Cup, against lower division opposition, I agree he's a hat-trick machine but that's not why we signed him. My agenda is to get Premier League quality goalscorers into the club. I think over three years we have seen that Gayle doesn't consistently fit that description. It's hard to argue otherwise on the evidence. Originally posted by Mr_Gristle

But he has been used in this role, more than once and to no effect. His ability to hold on to the ball and pass it to a Palace player has not proved up to the required standard. I too, would like to see him given a proper go (otherwise what's the point of having him at all?) but the only conceivable role to which he might be suited is playing off the knock-ons of a big man (which is how we scored two against Liverpool). And we show zero desire to play that way.

Yes those are the areas we probably ought to upgrade next but it isn't something we need to do between now and the summer. Also, it's not like we've not tried to fix the striker problem. We spent on Gayle two years ago, Wickham in the summer and now Adebayor. It's just that the first two haven't fully panned out in their (short) time with us.

Do you even remember 2010-2011. We were in administration FFS and now you're complaining 5 years later about being safely mid table in the prem. Unbelievable. The truth is that we don't NEED anybody. Yes we could do with improving our squad but it isn't worth overpaying to do so if the net result is finishing 9th instead of 13th. If you're not supremely confident that either the next signing will DEFINITELY get us into Europe or is an absolute bargain then it's pointless to spend now as the Jan window is typically way worse value for money than in the summer. Just accept that we're basically safe and worry about what we do to challenge for Europe next year. Or would you rather we panic and sign somebody for the sake of it and risk ending up with another Mutch/Campbell/Kebe/that Spanish fella who did absolutely nothing and whose name I've forgotten? That would be José Campaña. This site had about 16 song threads for him before he even landed in this country.

Actualy I've forgotten the other 15 players we signed blind that Summer as well before reverting back to virtually the promoted team plus Chamakh and CamJam. I'll have another look at some point and be shocked. It'll be like looking at potential signings seeing as most either hardly or didn't play at all.

Deadline Day is a product of Sky and is a load of over hyped bollocks. This quote sums it up for me: All this, we were reminded, was simply build-up to the final three hours of the window and the arrival of Sky's own Jim White (at one point there were exclusive Sky Sports News pictures of Sky Sports News' Jim White arriving at Sky Sports News to present Sky Sports News).
