For me, two things have changed this summer versus the chapters of the "Wilf Wants to Leave" saga of previous years. This year, I don't care if he goes but, conversely, this year I think there's less chance of him going than there was the past few years, especially two summers ago. I don't care because the song has got old (the endless media speculation and briefing), we're rebuilding our squad and in so doing, hopefully going to be using tactics that aren't so Wilf reliant. God knows, we need to. We're going to have move on from him one day, he's not getting any younger, he has two years left on his deal so if we're ever going to cash in, now is probably the time. Of course, we'll miss him; of course I don't really want to lose him, but being unemotional every story has its end and I've reached a point where I'm happy to get to the end of this one. Unless Wilf wants to commit the rest of his career to Palace, it's time to sort this out for once and for all. And build a squad capable of actually winning a game when our best player is injured. But. I simply can't see anyone paying what Parrish wants (I'm guessing 50-60 million) for a player who's approaching 30 (28, right?), who's a great show-pony but scores only 8-10 goals a year on average, and who stands out on an average team but would be unlikely to shine in anything like the same way on a top 6 team. Would a top-6 team want him? Probably yes. But not to play the leading role he plays at Palace. And I'm not sure any top-6 side right now would pay 50 million for essentially a squad player. So that leaves the likes of Everton, where he's about as likely to get Champions League football or win anything as he is at Palace. I think unless £30-£40 million becomes acceptable to Parrish, he's unlikely to move.

Think you are bang on with that assessment Syd. Just seen this pop up on my news feed . . . Well done Wilf.

He needs to enjoy his football again and find his form. If it means a move then so be it. He looked disinterested at the end of last season and his prolific whining was about as appetising as Royball. Thanks for all your entertainment over the years Wilf. Good luck and farewell.

He needs to move on now, for his own good and the clubs. He will always be an integral part of what Palace have achieved over the last 10 years. Good luck Wilf ….

Wonder what Wilf's up to? Interesting that there's no hint of a whisper from any club wanting to start negotiating for him. There's usually something kicking around during this stage in the close season, but zilch. Even if he wanted to see who the new manager is, there are no clubs being proactive - as far as I am aware anyway. Maybe he'll still be a Palace player again next season. If indeed this turns out to be the case his chances of moving to a 'bigger' club get slimmer with each passing year.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

The difficulty for Wilf is that when he signed his last contract he either didn't negotiate a release clause or if he did it was set at a ridiculously high amount. I guess if someone says Wilf we can't possibly let a player of your quality go for less than £80M many players would think yeah I am worth that so its fine. Now, from a contractual point of view we can probably hang on to Wilf for another 18 months. But what Wilf do we hang on to? The one who thinks yeah nobody recognises what I am worth? Or the one who thinks his management team made a mistake on the last contract and I am mega peed off? Sometimes last season, his body language during games would indicate the latter. I love the guy and hope he stays forever but if its not with a glad heart then its not going to end well for anyone.
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. |

And after his body language towards the end of this campaign just gone, nothing suggests we're going to see anything but a repeat.

Not a word from anyone in the press other than a speculative piece on whether he might suit one team or another. If he is going I would rather it was sooner than later so we can use the money early enough to get a player(s), settled into the side. I thought he became a bit of a liability at times last season although his goals were invaluable. Part of me wants him to stay but there is zero point if he is not in the right mindset. We should not however give him away. £40m seems about right.

A refreshed, interested Zaha is like for like irreplaceable for his fee (less Manure’s cut). Personally, I’m not sure he would go anywhere other than Arsenal or Spurs. Can’t think why he would want to take his family to Everton. Maybe France is an attraction for him?
