When he first came to Palace I was excited and ignored my Sunderland supporting mate who claimed he was injury prone. My friend was right the guy is stealing a living from us. Get him out the door we are not a charity. If you look at his career he only became injury prone when he came to us. I’d also say he probably isn’t so much injury prone as he suffered a career ending injury at Swansea.

I think next season could be his year. Banging them in. Looks like he has started early with 2 today. If he can stay fit it will be like a new signing.

I would keep him only on a small retainer plus performance/ appearance related contract. He has something to offer, but we have looked after him enough now and time for him to gamble on his future too.

One supposes if Mr Hodgson, Benteke and Wickham all sign new contracts, HOL be awash with nostril flaring supporters in a foam-flecked frenzy.

I can only apologise if my tautology has become rather tedious.

Wickham does not have the body for PL player. He looks awesome, but that is all. Still, rather keep him than Benteke.....

Even if Wickham was willing to stay on a pay-as-you-play deal, he'd take up a place in the 25 man premier league squad. He is also 'homegrown'. I doubt the former fact matters much - we basically operate with a squad of 18 - 20 senior players, plus a couple of u21 players (Mitchell, Eze, Ferguson) who don't need to be included in the 25 man list anyway: The homegrown thing is interesting though. You must have at least 8 in your 25 man squad. Last year we had 16, but if we were to ship out Cahill, Clyne, Dann, Derher, Henderson, Hennessey, McCarthy, Townsend, PVA, Ward, Wickham, and Woods (without even thinking about selling Zaha), we'd be very short of not only squad numbers, but homegrown players too. I doubt we will release all of those players at once (Dreher remains under contract I believe), but the club will need to keep an eye on the quota, perhaps influencing transfer activity and contract renewal plans in favour of one or two from that list being retained. Andy Carroll is on a pay as you play at Newcastle, so there is some precedent...
