Going down wouldn't be too bad for me if I thought we could rebuild and get promoted again fairly quickly.

My big worry is that there'd be an implosion. We'd have to sell the best (most costly) players and replace them with who? There don't seem to be any rising stars amongst the youth on the books (not that they're ever given a chance).

Even in the unlikely event there's money available, who'd want to play here? Maybe they'd find one or two Albanians if the scouting system is working at all.

It seems that in 7 years in the EPL there has been zero investment in the club. Treading water.

So we must battle to stay up and ensure that this spell in the EPL will not be entirely wasted.

Totally agree, the key point to this is that every club (apart from Everton & Arsenal) at some point get relegated. We will get relegated, bad luck or otherwise, sometime, probably in the next few years. We need to build an affordable team and a plan that gives us a better long term future than it looks like right now and we need to stay up whilst we put our house in order.

This will make Parish a success as a chairman because the overspending with very little strategy or nous doesn’t make someone successful. It just creates problems for later. I’ve been saying it for years and now we’re here in the reality of the outcome from it.

We all agree in hindsight. However Benteke, for example, justified the outlay in his first year. No-one could have predicted what followed. He could have carried on as he was and we could have been looking at getting our money back now.

Having achieved promotion ahead of plan we started this period of top flight football at a distinct disadvantage and we had to do short term actions to maintain our place. We have certainly stalled in the last couple of years, and need some radical changes now.

You're quite right, I think Parish and Hodgson have done ok so far but to be considered a success need to right a sinking ship and soon.

Absolutely! I know I keep saying it but relegation could soon see us in the lower reaches and not just the Championship. Also sorry but I really don't want to see second rate football in League 1 or 2. At least in the Prem we can admire the opposition even if with clenched teeth, and occasionally some wonderful skill from our own players (e.g Andros at Citeh last year and Ayew at home against West Ham this year.

... which equates to one wonder goal per season!

It's almost as if Parish has to look at it that this summer we are starting from scratch, new plan for the prem and that we will be joined by 3 other clubs from the champ and we need to compete with them for survival.

Then, stay up, season after that we push on, but not in a way which see's us going back into over spending.

Reason I say this is because sooner or later we really need to stop, get off the ladder and get on one we want to be on, even if it is at the bottom and I honestly think we have enough in as, can't even believe I am saying this after 8 years, but we have enough to compete next season with the mentality we are starting from scratch, which we will be - no will, big earners off the wage bill, players that a re journeymen, misfits, doing what needs to be done to get us over the line.

Then, only then we can start restructuring. Relegation isn't the end of the world... but as we have seen for some clubs poorly managed, which I believe with parish we are, we will fall hard and crash.

As an edit, I really wished that this January was the reset we needed.

I would have sold zaha this jan, replaced and used the rest of the season as pre season for next year.

His manager choices after Sam didn’t fit Benteke. FDB was Parish’s vision and Roy was his next panic. There hasn’t been much consistent planning and implementation, and this is where it’s gone wrong and got expensive. The changes in strategy or thinking in his mind have been too chop and change. Pardew project, to Sam, wanting him to stay, to FDB.

Of course there will be tests that aren’t of his making, but there are added ones of his own. It all goes back to him not being a football man and surrounding himself with yes men wanting to stay on the Prem payroll.

Quite a lot of our problems stem from what and who we are, we are a club that has to take a gamble with everything because that's the way the cookie crumbles being in this league and us as size in it ..look at West Ham they took huge gambles! Benteke on youtube looks extremely competent scoring goals from all over the place so I don't see why any manager wouldn't have wanted him I purely think injury has got the better of him and he simply cannot get the thought of doing the injury again out of his head ..we are just unlucky with him, but when he first arrived and during that first season scoring that header at Middlesbrough he was and he looked marvelous and well good enough to keep us in the goals for many seasons ..sadly his gamble is hanging on in intensive care not any use to us in the slightest, only the very top sides can rid themselves of gambles with millions and billions.

To be fair, he kept us in the league in his first season with his 15 goals, not a great tally for a 27 mil striker but the revenue he saved by keeping us in the PL that year was invaluable. However, long before he had any injury, from his second season onwards he lost form and became very lazy, he could not even score from the penalty we were awarded in the last few minutes when we were drawing 0-0 with Man City. He has just lost his touch and is not the player he was nothing to do with injury and loss of confidence. The three goals he scored for Belgium was against the equivalent of non-league footballers, I'm not sure but I think it was either Malta or one of the other smaller European Nations. We should not have renewed his contract, saved on the wages and let him go on a free as frankly that is his worth these days!

We will defeat Newcastle, Benteke will be on the scoresheet and we will all feel far more comfortable!

We can't start from scratch because we've burdened ourselves with ageing, average players on big money that nobody else will buy. We need to stay up simply because we can't drop down to Championship-level revenue (i.e. an absolute pittance) while maintaining the squad that we've got.

What is needed is a complete rethink of transfer policy, buying in younger players with resale value - but this has to be a gradual process and we need PL revenue to keep us from complete financial ruin until we can replace most of the playing squad.
