Rumour is he had pretty much recovered and then picked up an injury in training?

I think it more likely we leave the EU sooner than Wickham returns to first team action.

He needs to retire or drop down leagues

if you are getting injured all the time it is either to do with Palace training or his body can't handle this level.

It looks like his body can't handle it so to keep forcing it is not good and really it's about money/fame for this guy like so many footballers now days.

the true lovers of the sport will retire or drop down the leagues.

Show me a player who has been out for over 12 months who is restored to former glory.
It just doesn’t happen. Wickham is a gonner at top level (not that he was ever fully there)
We need to accept this as does he and move on.
All serious injuries of this length of time return slower and less mobile. It’s over.

He could be useful 'if' we got relegated (hopefully we won't.)

it's better to ask how many come back from ACLs. there simply aren't many that miss over a full year, and when they do it's often for other even nastier injuries/conditions (I would speculate). so the candidates to draw from are small in the 1st place.

I think all those who come back from ACLs lose a tiny fraction of speed/explosiveness. Murray had a good career subsequently though. Sheared did his ACL I believe and had a good scoring record after (but wasn't quite the same)

From memory Salako did his and came back to play for us pretty well. He may have been one of the early ones to have a dead person's transplanted (or grafted) which is commonplace now.

Benteke has a couple available, he certainly has very little use for them.
