We used to get "Do you want your palm read?" and if you stupidly said yes some dick with a paintbrush would paint your palm red. There was "Do you know Paul?" and if you said "Paul who?" they'd say "Pull tie" and yank your tie so hard you couldn't undo the knot without scissors. And there was "Do you want to be mooed?" and you'd go "what?" then they'd pin you down and fill your mouth up with grass like a cow. They did that to me on my birthday once and that upset me all the more because until that point I'd assumed people were immune to that sort of thing on their birthdays! In hindsight, I was probably bullied. There must be some compensation in this somewhere. Give No Win No Fee But If Win Take 90% a ring.

Indeed there did. A proper old late-Victorian asylum on Dartford Heath. My next-door neighbours back in the day (in Northumberland Heath, Erith) worked there. I played cricket there a few times, and play regularly had to be suspended while the 'guests' took a stroll across the square. I played on Chislehurst Common too, but there were fewer such incidents! Some of you may know that some of our particularly old terms of abuse such as idiot, cretin, feeble minded and imbecile were actually terms of classification arising from the Mental Deficiency Act of 1913. There was also another category along the lines of Moral Defective by which anyone who offended societal norms could be detained. This resulted, for example, in women who had children out of wedlock ending up in mental institutions.

And of course to go round (or around) the bend referred to the fact that the asylum would tend to be built beyond a settlement and out of sight. As was the case at Bexley. Believe it was in Lambeth originally before moving to the site in monks orchard road I believe that historically it started life just outside the old city walls at BIshopsgate (where Liverpool ST Station now stands), then at Moorfields and then to Southwark.
