if a muslim was thought to have bought a book containing details on how to build a bomb and then used it to blow someone up, i hardly think people would be accused of painting themselves in a bad light if they pointed that out.

instead of being annoyed at this man not ticking the right boxes for you we should concentrate on doing our best to stop all of those wishing to carry out extreme acts, on religious grounds political grounds and all others who are mentally in a dangerous place.. by keeping this material out of the hands. hopefully this loophole has already been tightened in recent years due to terror attacks rightly so.

Or stop cutting spending on mental health programs and treatment programs. Friends of mine in these areas, which I have experienced first hand, have been complaining in recent years of less capacity and longer and longer times between referral and treatment - Especially for long term patients.

This is a national disgrace.

We once kept the mentally ill in big buildings which was terrible for them but now we have gone full circle and now the public are at risk.

I'd love to say he was more of a terrorist and less mental that the Orlando shooter, to get people to pipe down for a minute but I'll have to make do with saying they're both valid descriptions of the offenders.

have first hand experience with my job of how the mental health system in the south east / london is failing..is a total disgrace, we all tut when something happens but nothing is done about it..governments would rather waste money on referendums and such like rather then sorting out the problem

Sometimes I set out for Ludlow
Sometimes I end up in Chepstow

even with physical problems the health services fob people off so with mental health care they often miss out totally. if people feel they are coming apart at the seams or getting disenfranchised to the point they are having negative thoughts towards some in society its a real problem. we do need to invest in this area much more. the cost of not doing so is much greater than the saving in turning a blind eye.

I think an act can be both a hate crime, an act of terrorism and the product of mental ill health. I think it would be churlish to specifically blame far right groups specifically as causing this, but there is a climate of antagonism that's been stoking recently, that could easily have fed into someone's mental health problems.

There is something of an appeal to far right and far left groups to alienated and psychologically unstable people, like Brevik. But they also don't tend to fit in well with those groups, because they're attracted to the mythology around them, rather than the politics involved - and typically want to do something immediate and now, rather than become involved in the endless meetings, discussions, socials and debates.

a very rightminded balanced stance. this is not a time for playing favourites.

the guy wasnt even at the shop or in the area at the time. early reports unfortunately for him placed him there when he wasnt. multiple eye witnesses have said they heard it, some people said they didnt. this man has said to lbc that 'he has not spoken to anyone who heard that phrase' and that he is very concerned for his own personal safety at being linked to the claim he heard 'britain first'. hence the poster. Thats the full picture. the police appear to believe this man was probably a far right extremist with mental health issues who targeted the MP. even if he did shout the term obviously britain first have a great many members who would never dream of supporting his actions.

Unfortunately we have television news who played up the political angle from the word go and we have a police force who are terrified of doing or not doing anything that could be criticised by one group or another.

As a result we have this little dance where we entertain the idea that this bloke was part of some Nazi conspiracy.

The truth will be more prosaic I'm sure.

i think many people engaging in possible terrorist activity are mentally ill. It was said best here: [Link] of course many of the replies are all isis isis isis. in all of these cases we need a level headed approach. a lurch from selectively dismissing the big picture in some cases and trying to ignore the information that is coming out in another is not helpful.
