Apart from seniority I don't know why Benteke was on for Mateta.

He's given more food for thought than I figured he would a few weeks ago. For the next few weeks at least, we are short of 2 players and that provides Mateta with an opportunity to play that he may not gave got. We now have a potentially time driven situation for PV to make up his mind about him. There has been an improvement in his play, but let's not lose sight of the fact that Norwich and Millwall are not close to the level of the majority of the teams in the Premier League.

It is noticeable, that when an underperforming players contract is nearing renewal, suddenly they improve. I first noticed this with Tommy Black years ago, he stunk the place out, 2 months before his contract was up, he surprisingly became very good, next season he went back to normal dross.

Oh Tommy Tommy I obviously don't know any more than you if its true or not, but I've never believed this. Everyone said the same about Benteke. If a player, particularly an attacker has the ability to perform and score goals when they fancy - surely they would do it every week and get themselves a move to a much better team than us!

Mateta has poor control, hence his goals all coming from one touch finishes. For overall team-play I do not think he is good enough. If he keeps playing and scoring though I would re-consider but for now it's a no from me.

Tommy Black - was on fire for a few months playing just behind the striker, then disappeared for the next few years. Don't think Trevor Francis helped but his decline was pretty shocking. Definitely a good player in there somewhere though.

According to The Standard today:- Following Friday's meeting with their rivals, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish met with Mateta at the Amex Stadium to congratulate him on his recent performances in a show of faith from the club. Should the Chairman really be chatting to the players in this manner as surely any show of faith should come from the manager and not the chairman

I've watched Mateta closely when I've had the chance (e.g. focused on him when he doesn't have the ball). He clearly is capable of scoring goals but I'm not convinced about his all round contribution. The big question is whether we can get someone better for £15 million (or whatever the number is)? I suspect we can but I'm happy to trust the judgement of PV and his team, they see the lad in training every day.

Was impressed with Mateta today and have been over the last month or so. Not 100% sure if we should make him permanent and thankfully that's not my call but I do quite like what he's offering to the team right now. Let's see how much he plays 2nd half of the season
