I think back to the days of Border,Boycott Edrich,Close etc etc - You had to really work hard to get these batsmen and others of their ilk out as they played with concentration and application. They got their heads down, played themselves in and ground out valuable runs. Our current lot are the direct opposite of these stars of yesteryear. Blame it on Limited overs cricket Willo.

Regarding Boycott he got 246 runs by himself against India I think 1975. England won the match mainly because of his knock. His reward ? Dropped for the next game !!!!!!

I think that England won the match as two India's bowlers injured themselves. Boycott's innings was so slow and painful to watch that by tea time the stadium was almost empty as all the spectators had left

He was selected, as he has been for years now, as an all rounder. You don't pick a batsman to go in at 7 behind the other all rounder and the keeper. But don't take my word for it: Root explained that Pope's omission is not a reflection on the 20-year-old's performance, but a tactical decision that enables Moeen provide cover for the bowling of Ben Stokes, who has a slight knee problem. "It's a tough call to leave Ollie Pope out, he's not done a huge amount wrong," said Root. "I thought he showed a lot of promise. Everything we've seen in him he's delivered, to a degree, on two very challenging surfaces. "It's a decision made for balance and making sure that we had plenty of bowling options. It's not a decision made on how he's gone in the two games. I'm sure you'll see a lot of Ollie Pope in the future. "Stokes is able to bowl, but with the concern over the knee, we just wanted to make sure we had plenty of options to take 20 wickets."

I just sat through watching Ali tour Australia and New Zealand and failing significantly all winter. Others get discarded yet here he is. Stoneman just made 144.....Hey lets bring him back as well.....It's ridiculous. Ali's test record as a batsman/bowler is not good enough and with the Currans and Stokes we simply don't need another bits and pieces all rounder. We need dedicated batsman who can average over 40 and a spinner who can threaten overseas. Ali is neither of those things and he is a step backwards.

The trouble with Geoffrey is that he only tells his version of events. I was working in pakistan when England toured in 2000. Met all the squad and commentators like Botham, Gower, David Lloyd and Boycott. I did not realise how disliked Boycott was by his fellow commentators, he always sat on his own and the names Botham called him are quite unprintable. I believe at the time Boycott was working for Indian TV

Unfortunately Sir Geoffrey will be watching Jennings waving a stick of rhubarb squared up in front of the stumps this morning, liked or disliked. Hopefully he can get through it somehow and post a score.

George Dobell who knows a thing or two about cricket has written an interesting article about Moeen Ali here [Link]

I cannot abide Boycott as a commentator and whenever he (or Tufnell) are on the mike I switch off or over. Boycott may have been a great batsman in his day but that day was decades ago and he is irrelevant nowadays. His constant references to octogenarian cricketers that most youngsters listening have never heard of just serves to put them off the game. Fred Truman was sacked from the TMS team for being a boring old fart but the powers that be can't seem to see that Boycott is built in the same mould
