It's cool! I agree with you should always be looking for a happier life. However life gets in the way ( mortgage, kids, palace ) sometimes you just have to stick at things if you've worked your way up! Having a roof over your head and food on table will do I'm happy enough was just making a valid point about a profession I work in and care about! Definitely worse jobs in the world than being a PE teacher mate! No worries she's just broken her arm and my missus who works in the private sector couldn't get the day off ( another great thing about being a teacher ha ha) I'm back tomorrow and will be at the palace Saturday hopefully with a plaster casted palace mad daughter! I hope your happy in your life Tom? I will continue to post on here occasionally between work commitments if thats ok too Tom?

It's getting worse.

I have to say, since I gave up teaching, the stress levels have gone right down and my family love having me back at weeekends and in the evenings.

Funny that nick.....I love quiz shows (high brow. Or not so).and the amount of "teachers" that appear on different ones is quite large,(you would properly say that have to so they can supplement their income).
But the trouble is they never win anything, because their limited amount of knowledge is total pants.
Funnily enough the only ones who do are the retired ones.
There was a history teacher on one the other day,and 2 of his question were basic history(elder primary school I would say),and he cdidv not have a danny.

always a Norwood boy, where ever I live.

When I was a kid, PE teacher essentially meant someone incapable of teaching, who demanded an athletic performance from others that they were incapable of, picked on kids to boost their ego and who was suspiciously always hanging around the showers to inspect that kids properly washed themselves. Standards have probably improved in the last 30 odd years though.

Life is, though, as they say, short. Avoiding stress is definitely a good idea, as is avoiding responsibilities. I'm sure I missed out on some great experiences by not having kids, but man do I love the freedom and stress free life that comes with it.

Survey claims 8/10 teachers have had mental health problems due to the job.

Wouldn't surprise me. Given the hours, stress, the responsibility, and the difficulty of having time off sick etc.

The system really needs to be revisited with a view to reducing the amount of 'out of school' hours that teachers end up doing, or its going to be a rolling profession of 20-30 year olds

PTSD is a very different stress related disorder, as it relates to traumatic incidents, as opposed to prolonged exposure to stress (they're at different ends of the spectrum).

Although they do share a similar factor, both essentially a the product of over exposure to stressful environments (PTSD typically occurs as a result of short but intense stressful situations, where as other stress disorders such as anxiety disorder form from low intensity long exposures to stress).

Its interesting that the popularity of the media is in linking PTSD to veterans, as you do in your example, however its most commonly seen in women, and as the result of domestic violence and sexual assault - Something that doesn't get anywhere near the same level of focus.

The problem of long term exposure to stress is that it manifests in physical problems (blood pressure, heart disease, immune-suppression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, phobias, compulsive disorders, substance abuse disorders, panic disorders, affective disorders (notably depression) all of which ultimately are detrimental, and result in long term suffering.

Whilst its certainly tragic that people serving in the military suffer from stress, that doesn't somehow make the fact that actually a very large percentage of the population also are being exposed to unnecessary stress any more acceptable.

The dismissal of stress as a major issue in human health reminds me somewhat of the dismissal of the precursors definitions of post-traumatic stress disorder.
