DEADED "Jeff Beck, one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time, has died at the age of 78. The British musician rose to fame as part of the Yardbirds, where he replaced Eric Clapton, before forming the Jeff Beck group with Rod Stewart. His tone, presence and, above all, volume redefined guitar music in the 1960s, and influenced movements like heavy metal, jazz-rock and even punk. Beck's death was confirmed on his official Twitter page." (BBC 1.12.23)

As a teenager I used to go to Eel Pie Island in Twickenham most Sundays where the Yardbirds were the semi resident band and saw both Eric Clapton and later Jeff Beck playing - both probably teenagers at the time

One of the best guitarists of his generation and a sad loss. RIP

I have a very feint recollection of Jeff Beck on 'Top of the Pops' singing 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' changing the words to "Hi Ho Tottenham Hotspur'. More sad news.

Sad news, Great guitarist, two classics to remember him, Becks Bolero-The Truth(album) and Cause weve ended as lovers-Blow by Blow(album)
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I knew Jeff Beck as a schoolboy. We were in the same year at Hackbridge County Secondary. There were 4 classes, ranked on ability. He had no interest in school and no obvious academic skills. He was always moody, difficult and unapproachable and showed no musical interest, quite unlike another contemporary at the same time, Roy Budd who played the school piano and made it sing. Roy went on to become a famous composer of film scores. Jeff was just different. He had long hair well before it became fashionable and rode a chopper bike with cow horn handles when such things were unknown. He lived in Desmayne Rd Wallington, opposite Beddington Park and close to where I grew up, so we occupied the same spaces but weren’t in the same circles. Strangely the school, which was a bog standard, run down secondary modern long since demolished, also produced two other well known people. Alex Stepney and Edward Woodward both went there. Jeff could certainly play guitar but knowing him as a boy I was never surprised to hear when he had fallen out with band members or failed to secure a place. Apparently he was approached to join the Stones at one time but couldn’t agree on what his role would be. My wife, already worried about my health, received the news of his death very badly.! RIP Jeff. May your clouds have silver linings.

RIP Jeff. May your clouds have silver linings. I too, knew Jeff Beck at Elmwood school Wisbech, maybe we knew each other too, although he was a year ahead of me. After the Wallington Odeon closed down and was converted into a cafe, a friend of mine worked there and served Beck a burger and after eating it he left without paying. Whenever Beck's name was mentioned my pal would say 'that b****** Beck still owes me' because he had to make up the cost from his wages. Wisbech also refers to some of the other names at that old school, like Roy Budd who went on to write many film themes including Get Carter. My claim to fame is that I beat him at marbles. Anyway, very sudden and sad news about the great guitarist's death. Thoughts with all those close to him. RIP JB.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
