Can this be true ? - Youngsters to be fast-tracked

Just seen this article on Newsnow. Personally, I don't think it will happen eventhough it should. There are some games where it's highly likely there will be nothing to play for :- Sheff Utd, Aston Villa, Arsenal I wouldn't put them in against City, Leicester, Chelsea or Liverpool as they have either top 4 or the title to play for.

We've had a couple poached recently plus have lost one of our main academy scouts to Man U. If we blood these guys they will be worth more in compensation - they might even stay.

I just watched the highlights of the U18 5-1 demolition of West Ham and Rak-Sakyi was instrumental in this, with at least 3 assists. I really hope he does get some game time in the last remaining 8 fixtures, as we need to try to convince him that he can have a promising future with us, without having to wait for years to see a breakthrough. I also hope that either Eddie Howe or Sean Dyche will get the manager's job and can see the potential within our Academy. Olimabu is also full of promise, as are several others.

If precious few youngsters are coming through your academy system and getting first team football then it strikes me the whole thing is a waste of time and money. Since Zaha and Williams made the breakthrough I can only think of Mitchell and Wan Bissaka making the step up from Junior to Senior level ( putting aside the odd sub. appearance or league cup game by people like Woods, Dreher and Kaikai). Hopefully the upgrade of the Academy might improve things and attract the quality youngsters, but 4 graduates in 10 years is not very impressive. Will we see any U23s/U18s get a run out in these last few games? I'm not holding my breath. Edited by Pete53 (09 Apr 2021 11.26am)

Isn't pre-season the time for experimenting? It's always going to be a tricky one- i.e. deciding when a player is ready to step up. AWB only got his chance because of injuries to other players, likewise Mitchell. Otherwise, successive coaches have not taken the risk on youngsters - not brave enough or genuinely don't think they are good enough?

The old ' rule of thumb ' used to be if you could get just one player a year through the ranks and competing for a first team place, you were doing ok. I think we may see some of the youngsters at least graduate into first team training / on the bench before the season is out. Not for the sake of it though, only if the players can handle the step up.

I too, would like to see a few of our youngsters given a taste of the first team environment before the season ends now we are pretty certain of staying up. Having seen some of the talent on display in our under 18s recently we do seem to have players with ability at that level for sure. Wonderful for our future prospects if we could produce another Zaha from within. Other clubs are adventurous enough to try the likes of Foden, Sancho, Hudson-Odoi and Rashford so let's have a go.

Has any clarity been achieved regarding how covid bubbles actually work in football? It seemed plausible that the youth would be kept in separate bubble to the first team, if only to limit the extent of mingling through the club, and that sticking a youth player on the bench for the first team was difficult as a result. Since then this young left back has been on the bench (or up in the stand two metres away from others at least), and the article suggests a couple of the youngsters have trained with the first team, so I presume that's not a problem now?
