My expectation is each season PL survival, a cup run now and again, the occasional scalp of a top club, some memorable moments ( Ayew wonder goal, Eze free kick, Mateta back heel, Wilf on fire etc ). With that goes the other side of the coin, grinding out results, some dull games and some horrendous defensive errors by individuals.

Basically what we have now.

What I do not expect is a regular supply of exciting play week in week out. We last had that in the season when Murray was top Championship scorer, or when we were terrifying defences with Wilf down one wing and Bolasie down the other but those days have gone.

It's easy to criticise the performances from an entertainment aspect but I can't see we are going to consistently have stability and entertainment without a substantial amount of cash appearing from somewhere.

That's just my opinion, but it's gets a bit wearing having so much moaning and criticism based on someone not enjoying watching.

100% agree

Our expectations are aligned.

I’m not too bothered about performances. It’s all about winning and losing. We played terrible against brighton, but waking up after a victory is all I cared about.

So we should expect zero excitement instead, apart from once every few months? How about no shots on goal or no attacks for weeks or months? We are grown up Palace fans, not school children.

Now you are. going over the top. How did we beat Wolves, Newcastle, Brighton without any shots or attacks for weeks or months?. It's not a usual season at the moment
with no crowds, games coming thick and fast and a horrendous injury list. Most grown up Palace fans accept the reality of this situation.

Fact- many teams of our size have tried to play expansive football and failed.
Stoke had Pulis for ages in PL and what happened when they tried to change?
Swansea tried and succeeded for a while where are they now?
Sheffield Utd did well last season and now?
The list goes on, what I want to see is passion in our play which IMO is lacking right now!!

I get your drift, passion is subjective and IMHO this unprecedented season with congested fixtures and no crowds has contributed to that.

Did Mateta not show some passion after his brilliant goal.

I expect Palace to play football and that should involve attacking the goal from time to time. Our entertainment value is negligible and on that basis I often feel that I'm wasting my time watching them. Your approach is probably realistic but we ARE all paying for what we see and are entitled to an opinion.

I've tried asking this question a few times and getting Roy's ardent supporters to lay down a benchmark of what success looks like.

For me, finishing higher than Sheffield United, West Brom, and Fulham won't represent a successful season. The narrative that staying up by any means mark some kind of miracle is simply not true anymore.

Trying to make it objective. We have:

The 9th biggest wage bill
The 15th most expensively assembled squad.

So somewhere between 9th and 15th wouldn't be unreasonable.

Given we are in our 8th year in the premiership, and our finishes have been 11th, 10th, 15th*, 14th, 11th, 12th, and 14th. (*for the cup final). I don't think would be unreasonable to claim that 14th with poor cup performance would represent a very poor season. 11th would represent a very good season. Any higher than 11th would be excellent.

Roy's remaining zealots will point out that after 26 games we are 13th. However, we have 12 games left, only 3 of which are against teams in the bottom half of the table. We did manage to obtain a staggering 15 points from the teams coming up in the first half of the season. In the run in I doubt we will get more that 9 in a best case scenario. 15th or 16th is all we have to look forward to this year.

The squad is weaker then it should ever need to be with us due to age and underperforming individuals, until this is eventually sorted out which could possibly take a few seasons once a new coach takes over, in our normal state we will be able to entertain somewhat better, things have definitely deteriorated more during this Covid outbreak because the rest periods are all over the place resulting in the older players picking up injuries and their performances being very inconsistent, everyone is struggling apart form one team which is running away with a bench worth more money then the entire Spurs team lol
