Why is Hodgson better than Pardew, both never won anything worth winning, both been sacked regularly, Pardew gung ho, Hodgson ultra defensive,
Pardew Pl 87-w35-d13-l39 40.2%.
Hodgson Pl 76-w27-d17-l32 35.5%.
Hodgson with better players, who is better?

Pardew's first year in charge was excellent, but eventually showed that he had no idea how to organise a team. We were an absolute shambles towards the end, especially defensively.

Hodgson has the opposite problem - overly rigid, inflexible, and cautious. Still, given a choice between the two, Hodgson will get you just enough to stay up whereas with Pardew it's a complete gamble.

Erm we do remember 2016 where we were officially the worst team of all 92 clubs in terms of points per game. right?

Hodgson teams might be a bit dull to watch but we are consistent and given the miracle he pulled off last season after FDB, he deserves more respect.

He's not exactly been backed in the market since he came here compared to most of our other managers. He's had a couple of decent loan players and a few signings.

Allardyce, Pards even Pulis were backed far heavier than he has been.

The one I would have loved to have seen stay as I think he would have really stabilised us was Allardyce. I think he knew he wouldn't be backed and walked out on a high.

The manager is always secondary to the players in terms of performance.
The fact is that we have not spent enough money in the last two windows and we have gone backward. Our squad is flimsy as shown when we lose Sakho.

It always puzzles me why fans always blame the manager when the truth is so easy to see.

Hodgson does tend to play the negative game against the top teams but that is realism I suppose. He knows that our best chance to get something from those games is to play it tight and hope for a lucky break. When that fails, it looks awful like against Spurs and Chelsea but when it works like against City, it looks like a masterstroke.

I can’t really see us being involved for too long in a relegation scrap with Roy, I could with Pardew

Hodgson’s football is very dull but the lack of backing is true. In fact it’s even worse to the point of no strikers etc and signing players for business decisions or hopes who he probably doesn’t want or was asked about. This is a concern if we ended his contract without a quality planned replacement.

Last season he was blessed with RLC and it hid some of Roy’s limitations even though the results were very good before RLC became a regular. A bit of new manager effect and getting 100% out of 11 players every single minute of every game as well.

Pardew had a harder job than Roy in his first season in that he took over later and had worse player.

In his second season we were safe by Christmas then he focused on the cup.

In his 3rd season, he ran out of ideas, as all these average managers do. BFS got a huge transfer kitty to replace him.

In his last few games we were going gung-ho partly because we had no defense. The players were still showing effort and commitment and at least there were goals and excitement.

Fans at Newcastle hated him because he was part of the "Cockney mafia". I spoken to some staff at Newcastle and they all really liked him and said he was an excellent people manager, shame about the tactics.

Roy isn't even going for it. Fans and Players alike look fed up.

Spending more money isn't always the answer: look at Fulham.

Yes we haven't kicked on but both times we tried it (Pardew 2nd season, then FDB) it didn't go well.

Be careful what you wish for cf. Charlton.

Since we came up all these teams have gone down:
Burnley
Cardiff
Fulham
Hull (twice)
Middlesbrough
Newcastle
Norwich (twice)
QPR
Stoke
Sunderland (double relegation)
Swansea
Villa
WBA

Southampton came 8th in 13/14, 7th in 14/15, 6th in 15/16, 8th in 16/17 and then nearly went down twice. Wet Spam keep struggling. Everton can't kick on. Chelsea came 10th in 15/16!

While of course I want us to improve I'd rather we're like we are than being in the Championship or worse: Leeds & Forest have both been in League 1 and neither have come up in the last 6 seasons.

What you say has a lot of truth, but, I do feel that we can't go on as we are as we will be joining those relegated teams that you have listed. We have a place in the Premier League and, within reason, should do all we can to preserve that place.

The club has to try to find some way to progress - that may entail a new manager, new coaching staff, different tactics or some clever spending in the transfer market, but I fear that if we carry on going back to square one each year, and not building on the previous season, our luck will eventually run out.

Of course there are risks involved with change as we
found out with De Boer, but there are also risks involved with just playing safe as you end up standing still and being overtaken by other teams.
