Is that posh electronics shop on the upper level of the whitgift still there at the old Allders end? Not surprised these sort of shops die. As it said, need a new cable, buy one on eBay for pennies and it's delivered tomorrow or the day after.

I recently upgraded my TV to 4K which I had wall mounted. If I had bought all the cables from Maplins it would have cost a fortune (not as much as Currys though) and I ended up buying good quality cables from Ebay at a fraction of the price

I just bought a graphics tablet for £49.99 there and that is ideal but of course it is not a routine product which everyone needs. So never bought much there I guess that is the problem. No 'pile it high sell it cheap' products that leap off the shelves. Shame I really like Maplin, something different. I was time wasting in one of their stores when I noticed a box of Harmon Kardon speakers forgotten under a display. I took it to the checkout for a price check they were £14.99 !! That was about 5 years ago they will be perfectly balanced for many years. Just like steeleye

Most shops do not provide added value, you walk in find what you want and take it to the till. It is easier to do that on the internet. The shops that survive will provide some form of additional shopping experience. Chains I expect to struggle include: WH SMith (jack of all trades master of none)

Anything you need to touch and feel can survive or sell you a coffee while you're there can survive although you can return online bought clothes after touching and trying on. I bet a quality toy shop in the new Westfield survives. It can be done, but if the marketing and the board are lazy then retailers will die.
