With the impending vote on dealing with teh issues that currently surround Parliament, is it time to up sticks and move it elsewhere in the Country to promote a more inclusive society, rather than London vs teh rest?

[Link]

I think its important to maintain the existing structure (after all its a UNESCO World Heritage Site) but for the public, not for un-elected stuffy barstweards in the Lords.

They could turn the existing place into a Hotel or even apartments (perhaps even selling it off to private sector), but for me it's relevance (as a seat of power) is quickly coming to an end, especially with the advances in communication etc.

Thoughts?

What happens to Whitehall? How are ministers meant to be in their department one minute and then in Parliament the next if they are in different cities?

You'd have to move the whole lot, which is quite an undertaking.

Don't necessarily disagree with doing that, and it might help regenerate part of a city elsewhere as has happened with Media City in Salford.

That of course was muted in the article I posted..but as i said in today's age...why the need to be there in person as opposed to via a weblink.

Move out, locally, get the work done and move back in.

Approx a quarter of all MPs are based in London and the South East, so it makes sense to keep it where it is.

You can't do parliament via Skype etc.

All the important s*** is in London. Moving would be a pain in the arse, all the MPs have property down here. Just move somewhere nearby for a couple of years. Maybe take over somewhere like the Barbican or something.

It moved years ago. To Strasbourg and Brussels.

I would move them to Stormont that's not in use.

Guido Fawkes had the right idea. If gunpowder is not available Boris Johnson might be persuaded to spontaneously combust.

Is the correct answer.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I would start by halving the number of MPs and reducing the Lords to about 300 peers. Of course I would rather the Lords were elected but turkey's generally don't vote for Christmas.

As regards the building they are iconic so we should keep them. As another poster said if you move parliament you have to move all the government departments. If we were starting from scratch that would make sense but I don't see doing it now will achieve anything.
