I am going to my first Burns Supper tonight. Quite looking forward to it, I like haggis and have learnt to tolerate bagpipes, despite the fact that they sound like a cat being strangled to me. I draw the line at wearing a kilt or a sporran as these items are too flamboyant for my tastes.

Has anyone else been to one of these? Are there strange Jock rituals that will take place? Is it a cultural ‘no-no’ to give the host a bottle of ‘Buckie’, a few ‘jellies’ and some ‘clean works’ as a gift in recognition of their hospitality?

I hear they invite English men so they can burn them whilst everyone dances around whilst singing The Proclaimers.

Auld Lang Syne
I know a man called Mr Lang
And he has a neon sign
Now Mr Lang is very old
So they call it old Lang's sign

I don’t know if that is better or worse than my prediction of events being left in a flat, which contains only a mattress & a kitten, whilst Deacon Blue’s ‘Destiny’ plays for 55 minutes, including a 10 minute drum solo.

That to me, is the definition of purgatory.

Dear Matt,

I leave it to you whether you tell either of these jokes or neither.

My neighbour knocked on my door at two in the morning, I answered quickly as I was playing my bagpipes.

What is worn under the kilt? Nothing, it is all in perfect working order.

Enjoy your supper.

Always surprised me that the Scottish Jewish community was so keen to celebrate their Rabbi Burns

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

The traditional recitation of Burn's Ode to the Haggis will be declaimed after it has been piped in and before consumption - you probably won't understand a word, but if you nod a lot and smile sagely you might get away with them thinking you do.....
