I'm getting increasingly disenchanted with my job (bored shyteless) and have recently started a Property business. With the price of property up North i'm seriously considering buying a few up that way but renovating them from down here doesn't make much sense; so have also been looking for family homes as well. Anyone else made the jump that could recommend areas to consider? Anyone else considering it at the moment?

I moved from South Norwood to Lincoln about 25 years ago. I had a job to go to. Driving is so much easier. You avoid the nastiness of the gang culture here-if the reports I read are true of life around the Croydon area. Racial tensions are few as I don't hear or feel any tensions between East Europeans-of which there are many in Lincolnshire- and Lincolnshire's folk. Schools and places to live vary of course, but that's not an issue if you do as we did and scout out areas before making your move. I am 100% happy I made the move, although inability to visit the best of London e.g. Selhurst Park, theatres and galleries often is a loss. You could adopt a local lower league team for your live football "fix". Main tip: scout out all aspects of the area you plan to move to. It worked for us.

Mrs H has a cousin in Withernsea. It's seen better days, but is now pushing to have a new pier built, and generally things are looking up, albeit at a rather slow pace. My tip for a successful move: get involved in your local community, and you'll never look back.

I'm a full time landlord/property developer and I now only buy up North. Regarding capital appreciation, prices are rising (quite quickly) as opposed to London which is now falling and the wider South East where prices are pretty much static. My advise would be go for it - but dont move there! Feel free to PM me if I can be of any help.

Depends how far 'North' you want to go. Back in the 70's(yes, I am that old), I moved to Northampton, wouldn't recommend there tho. In the early 2000's I moved to the Lake District.......WOW. Was there for 7yrs till circumstances dictated a move back south, BUT, gotta say Tebay/Oxenholme & finally Kendal were gorgeous as was the whole area.

i would buy property in an area that is earmarked to get new fast railway links. The 'East London line/ london Overground' made me wealthy in SE19. Now moved on and happy to live somewhere less urban. follow the link below.
