Who used to do penny for the guy as a kid? I always wondered why you don't see it anymore? Someone told me a kid got stabbed and it was banned or did it just fizzle out? Not something i'd want to see returning but I did used to make a few bob out of it !!

Because kids who would usually be out asking for pennies for the guy have learned that stabbing and mugging are significantly more profitable and carry less risk of being raped.

In the 60's our little gang from Wrythe Green used to have a guy at Carshalton Station.... very lucrative it was. The Station Master used to try and chase us off, but we gradually got back up the hill and outside the station with our Guy on a home made cart and our cries of "Please Mr....spare a penny for the Guy.... pleeaassse?" One year we made enough for a full hour's display around our bonfire, even allowing for the fact that most days we bought bangers and let them off before November 5th.... but we never started collecting before a week to go. These days fireworks are going off in late September.

I was wondering the same thing Why not make a Guy and leave it outside the train station and ask people to donate to charity No, hang on, it would probably lead to a call to the bomb squad or something And some spotty policeman who'd never heard of penny for The Guy might accuse you of racism, or sexism or causing offence to the terrorist community. or something

They always used to have a bonfire at the Streatham common display as well. Don't know of anywhere that has a bonfire at their display anymore.

Always used to go to the streatham common display as a kid mainly because it was free and my parents were too tight to pay for the display at Crystal Palace park

I still take my kids to Brockham each year and it is huge with an enormous bonfire - two great pubs on the green and the best fireworks I've seen, although I think Lewes is supposed to be pretty good too. There's a bonfire bus to Brockham from Redhill station if you don't want to drive - but there's loads of parking.
